Talking with Tad Boyle at the USA Basketball training camp

I went down to the USA men's basketball training camp and caught up with head coach Tad Boyle. He discussed working with a variety of young talent, the challenges in assembling a 12-man team, Bangot Dak and more.

Here are the 18 finalists that were in the gym yesterday Mark Armstrong, Tobe Awaka, Omaha Biliew, Kylan Boswell, Kanon Catchings, Myles Colvin, Eric Dailey Jr., Freddie Dilione, Jeremy Fears Jr., Trentyn Flowers, Dylan Harper, Ian Jackson, Tre Johnson, Ven-Allen Lubin, Asa Newell, Cameron Scott, Ernest Udeh and Cody Williams.

(Apologies for my shaky hand at the end. My arm was getting tired 😅)

Reality is undefeated.

UCLA and USC will each travel more than 15,000 miles roundtrip in conference play during their inaugural Big Ten season. In 2024 alone, the Bruins will travel to Rutgers, which is more than 4,800 miles roundtrip, while USC travels to Maryland and Penn State, each of which are more than 4,400 miles roundtrip.

UCLA also has trips to Hawaii and LSU booked on the 2024 schedule. So, in total, the Bruins will travel over 25,000 miles roundtrip. UCLA's shortest conference road trip is to Iowa, which is 3,082 miles roundtrip.

What the destination of CU's transfers says about the need for a rebuild

Looking at where CU's outbound transfers has ended up is more than just checking on an ex. It's instructive, as a large majority of them have ended up at schools outside the Power Five.

What that says about the 2022 roster and the Buffs' need for a rebuild

Danny O'Neil is one of the 20 quarterbacks competing in Los Angeles this week to earn a spot on the Elite 11 list come Friday. The Colorado commit from Indiana had a few struggles on the first day of action Wednesday night, but he is still making the most of his experience at the event. He's using his time to talk to some top receivers about the Buffs and pick up on things he can take back home with him and in the future at CU.

We caught up with O'Neil after the first night of the event to discuss what it means to him to be invited and participate int he prestigious quarterback event plus his thoughts on the latest run of commitments for the Buffs and a lot more. He is a polished interviewee, and you get a sense for that in this interview. You can watch the full interview with him and contributing reporter Kelly Horyczun above.

COMMITMENT: 4-star DE Brandon Davis-Swain makes the call for CU

Colorado has beat out USC, Purdue, Michigan and Auburn for a commitment from top-40 2024 defensive end Brandon Davis-Swain while on his official visit today. Another huge addition for the Buffs. Davis-Swain is on his third visit to Boulder this offseason, so he has built a strong relationship with the staff and has become a top priority for CU in this cycle.

Cody Williams competing for a spot on USA U19 National Team

First time for meeting Cody Williams, great person with great talent and what better way to further get to know your coach than competing for a gold medal. As of Wednesday, Williams is one of the 14 finalists and only 12 will make the final roster.

More on how Williams is doing in this experience and with Colorado basketball:

From Stewart Mandel's mail bag: better season CU or Pitt?

What are the chances we get a Pitt vs. Colorado football game in the next two seasons? And can we as a society make sure it’s on in prime time???? (No pun intended.) — Jesse K., Nashua, N.H.

Well, there are currently two Pac-12 vs. ACC bowl matchups — the Sun and Holiday bowls. Given Pitt was just in El Paso last year and twice in the last five years, that’s probably not viable. But I’d definitely be up for Deion vs. Narduzzi under the lights in San Diego.
Although … if Colorado actually makes a bowl game this year, every Pac-12 bowl is going to want the Buffs. I wonder if the Pac-12 would make sure someone else gets them just to spite the Holiday Bowl.

O-line thread...

From the news stand there is a good interview with Jack Bailey:

I think familiarity with the system gives both Bailey at LG and Washington at RT a leg up on their competition. Wells is a lock to start imo. That leaves LT and RG. Here is how I see things stacking up for the ol 2-deep:

LT: Lichtenhan, Wilty
LG: Bailey, Bebe
C: Wells, Bailey
RG: Brown, Harden
RT: Washington, Jatta

Others available:
Reggie Young
David Connor
Zilinska
Dempsey
Edwards
Reznik
Seaval

16 players now in the OL room. That is a good number, and we have a good mix of talent. Some of these guys have one year left to prove themselves so they are especially hungry. One key is the summer lifting and player-led workouts.
