Colorado coaching hot board: Ranking the candidates in the Buffs' search

As promised, here's my list of candidates for the CU coaching vacancy. It's mentioned in the story, but an important caveat here is that these are candidates I'd look at if I were the AD (which I'm obviously not). It's not necessarily who I think Rick George will choose

I had been compiling this list for a couple of weeks, once it became clear Dorrell wasn't going to be in Boulder too much longer, but if you've got any questions about the lists, candidates I included or didn't include, or whatever else, please don't hesitate to hit me up.

This is going to be a months' long search, so our plan is to update this board periodically based on any developments, reports or things that we learn

Official Game Thread CU vs ASU

Greetings everyone, a chilly evening for some football. The Buffs and the Sun Devils kickoff at 5:30 tonight. Deion Smith and Anthony Hankerson are both suited up during warmups, but Smith is not listed on the running back lineup for today. Alex Fontenot is suited up as well, if he does play, he'll probably have limited carries.

Owen McCown is also suited up even though J.T. Shrout is the starter for today. Drew Carter at backup.

ASU will start QB Trenton Bourguet this evening, but if he's not playing well Emory Jones is likely to come in.

I'm sticking with CU 20 ASU 14 and @Craig Meyer has ASU 24 CU 16

Early expectations, score predictions, thoughts for tonight's game? ⬇️

Transcript: Everything Mike Sanford said after Colorado's loss to Arizona State

We've got a full transcript of Mike Sanford's post-game press conference. He discussed, among other things, CU's defensive woes, Jordyn Tyson's big day, plans for Owen McCown and a possible redshirt, J.T. Shrout's performance and more

Today's Games

Some good games.

TCU still in the lead. Neither team looks great but TCU keeps finding a way to win which is always fun as it might cause a mess in the playoff.
FSU beating a really bad GT team.

Sadly ND getting it done against a massively overrated Syracuse team. Can’t win them all.

But happiness abounds —

Pedo State hung tough but finally Ohio State taking over and order is restored in the universe. (Now if PSU can just lose for the rest of eternity we will be close to real Justice).

Pretty ugly slate of games today.

Will keep track of teams Im hoping win today later:
KSU - hard to root against the mullet but I like an underdog

Wake - this could be a solid game
Tennessee - hoping to catch some of this one live this evening. Should be a great game and I like UT.
Illinois - hope Bielema does well there
Ole Miss - Can’t help myself dad. I’m sorry. I love State but can’t not root for the Lane Train
CU - hoping when I watch taped later it will be close and some good moments
UCLA - should roll but how do they respond against a perennially bad Stanford team that seems to be opportunistic each year against teams not paying attention.

Four-star forward Assane Diop sets announcement date

Four-star 2023 forward Assane Diop will be announcing his college commitment on Nov. 15. The 6-foot-10 Diop, who plays at Accelerated Prep in Lakewood, will be deciding between CU, Arkansas and Seton Hall. He'll be making the announcement along with his teammate Baye Fall, who is down to Arkansas, Rutgers, Auburn and Seton Hall

Diop is rated as the No. 110 player in the 2023 class, though ESPN has him at No. 56. Fall is the higher-rated of the two prospects, at No. 11 on Rivals, but Diop would obviously be a huge get for Tad Boyle and his staff. Rivals' FutureCast has Diop at 100% to Arkansas, so we'll see how things play out in a couple of weeks

Staff roundtable: Perspective and predictions for Colorado-Arizona State

Apologies for the delay in getting this up, but we have our weekly roundtable exploring key questions around CU and its opponent entering this weekend's game.

What will it take for the Buffs to win? What should we expect from J.T. Shrout? What do we think the final score will be?

It wasn't able to load into the story for whatever reason, but Nikki and I also recorded a video on Wednesday previewing the matchup. We're hoping to do more preview and post-game videos here for the rest of the season and for basketball season, as well.

Perspective from the other side: ASU insider Hod Rabino on matchup with CU

Saturday presents a more even matchup for Colorado, but ASU is still a 13.5-point favorite. Devil's Digest Hod Rabino reviews the advantages on the Sun Devils' sideline and how the team is progressing under their interim head coach Shaun Aguano.

Clay Patterson working to break offensive patterns

Interim OC Clay Patterson executed a variety of exciting and uneventful plays in his two games, but after acquiring only one touchdown and a field goal against OSU, more work offensively needs to be done.

“We didn’t play well enough. That’s the honest truth of it. We had opportunities to be in the game and to compete in that game and we just kind of keep making the same mistakes."

How Colorado is continuing to adjust to a new defensive scheme

Caught up with Gerald Chatman yesterday to discuss how things are coming along with implementing the new defense. Can't imagine how chaotic it has been for players, but he offered some good insight into how things have gone.

It has produced some uneven results -- great against Cal, not so great against Oregon State -- but Chatman talked a bit about what he thought the biggest struggles were last week

Are we being punked

I hated this hire from the beginning but is this guy for real? Goes to media days and says spoke to 100 people who don’t like USC and UCLA moving.
Gets cornered on it “well maybe it was dozens. And also of course I only hear from those that don’t like it “

We hired another stuffed shirt and yep - you guessed it - the PAC is as awful as it’s been. I haven’t met an alumni yet who doesn’t want to go. They all acknowledge it’s going to be tricky until UW, OU and others join but they all know the PAC is a dead end conference and has been so they are willing to live with the weirdness for a few years.

The PAC and its schools are just lost. What’s next ? RG for commisioner?

Book: The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II

I will have to read (listen) this book - I will soon as I can get it on audio from the library.

It was written by the Friday Night Author: Buzz Bissinger

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, college football was at the height of its popularity. As the nation geared up for total war, one branch of the service dominated the aspirations of college football stars: the United States Marine Corps. Which is why, on Christmas Eve of 1944, when the 4th and 29th Marine regiments found themselves in the middle of the Pacific Ocean training for what would be the bloodiest battle of the war – the invasion of Okinawa—their ranks included one of the greatest pools of football talent ever assembled: Former All Americans (3), captains from Wisconsin and Brown and Notre Dame (7 captains total), and nearly twenty men who were either drafted or would ultimately play in the NFL.

Within a matter of months, 15 of the 65 players in “The Mosquito Bowl” would be killed at Okinawa, by far the largest number of American athletes ever to die in a single battle.
