Staff roundtable: Perspective and predictions for Colorado-Arizona State

Apologies for the delay in getting this up, but we have our weekly roundtable exploring key questions around CU and its opponent entering this weekend's game.

What will it take for the Buffs to win? What should we expect from J.T. Shrout? What do we think the final score will be?

It wasn't able to load into the story for whatever reason, but Nikki and I also recorded a video on Wednesday previewing the matchup. We're hoping to do more preview and post-game videos here for the rest of the season and for basketball season, as well.

Perspective from the other side: ASU insider Hod Rabino on matchup with CU

Saturday presents a more even matchup for Colorado, but ASU is still a 13.5-point favorite. Devil's Digest Hod Rabino reviews the advantages on the Sun Devils' sideline and how the team is progressing under their interim head coach Shaun Aguano.

Clay Patterson working to break offensive patterns

Interim OC Clay Patterson executed a variety of exciting and uneventful plays in his two games, but after acquiring only one touchdown and a field goal against OSU, more work offensively needs to be done.

“We didn’t play well enough. That’s the honest truth of it. We had opportunities to be in the game and to compete in that game and we just kind of keep making the same mistakes."

How Colorado is continuing to adjust to a new defensive scheme

Caught up with Gerald Chatman yesterday to discuss how things are coming along with implementing the new defense. Can't imagine how chaotic it has been for players, but he offered some good insight into how things have gone.

It has produced some uneven results -- great against Cal, not so great against Oregon State -- but Chatman talked a bit about what he thought the biggest struggles were last week

Are we being punked

I hated this hire from the beginning but is this guy for real? Goes to media days and says spoke to 100 people who don’t like USC and UCLA moving.
Gets cornered on it “well maybe it was dozens. And also of course I only hear from those that don’t like it “

We hired another stuffed shirt and yep - you guessed it - the PAC is as awful as it’s been. I haven’t met an alumni yet who doesn’t want to go. They all acknowledge it’s going to be tricky until UW, OU and others join but they all know the PAC is a dead end conference and has been so they are willing to live with the weirdness for a few years.

The PAC and its schools are just lost. What’s next ? RG for commisioner?

Book: The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II

I will have to read (listen) this book - I will soon as I can get it on audio from the library.

It was written by the Friday Night Author: Buzz Bissinger

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, college football was at the height of its popularity. As the nation geared up for total war, one branch of the service dominated the aspirations of college football stars: the United States Marine Corps. Which is why, on Christmas Eve of 1944, when the 4th and 29th Marine regiments found themselves in the middle of the Pacific Ocean training for what would be the bloodiest battle of the war – the invasion of Okinawa—their ranks included one of the greatest pools of football talent ever assembled: Former All Americans (3), captains from Wisconsin and Brown and Notre Dame (7 captains total), and nearly twenty men who were either drafted or would ultimately play in the NFL.

Within a matter of months, 15 of the 65 players in “The Mosquito Bowl” would be killed at Okinawa, by far the largest number of American athletes ever to die in a single battle.

Colorado picked 6th in Pac-12 basketball preseason poll; video from Pac-12 Media Day

The Buffs were slotted right in the middle of the pack. Here's the full preseason poll:

OOC schedule

I have been critical of pur OOC schedule if this is all the effort we are going to put into recruiting and argued for 2 G5 and 1 P5 until we change the organization.
As a fan of college ball I’d rather play all P5 and and 1 G5 OOC that is regional only to rotate CSU and AFA. I would much prefer a 8 game conference schedule. Sadly we don’t recruit well enough to get bowl eligible if we do this.
With all this said I want to dispel the myth of the CU schedule this year as our issue.
AFA is only above .500 because of us and other patsies in OOC
UM is only above .500 because of us and other patsies in OOC
UA, CAL and ASU are bad.
OSU is a 7 or maybe 8 win team.

That is not a difficult schedule. As I pointed out when those other teams OOC were being touted on record no one was taking into account who they played. Now that they are playing other than little sisters of the poor only TCU continues to find a way to win.

CU needs to stop the spin and just admit that the recruiting has killed us. I am really hopeful Rick is gone shortly and we can begin a department rebuild focused on recruiting and support. If we do our schedules won’t be an excuse. It will be execution and to me that will be refreshing.

Maybe we can even recruit well enough to have 2 marquee P5 matchups in our OO. Each year as it should be

UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson signs NIL deal with Activision

UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson promoted the video game “Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time” through a recent NIL deal with the video game developer and publisher Activision. Thompson-Robinson posted a sponsored TikTok video of him playing the game, complete with on-screen captions that were written in an arcade-style font.

Thompson-Robinson has more than 640,000 followers on TikTok.

The NIL marketplace MOGL helped facilitate the deal. MOGL co-founder and CEO Ayden Syal said there was a strong fit between Thompson-Robinson and the Santa Monica, California-based video game developer.

“The fact that he plays the game and had a strong appreciation for the new launch was a requirement here and definitely something that Activision looked at,” Syal said. “We wanted the content to be not only organic but truly mean something.”

“It’s been a great season, bro,” Thompson-Robinson says into a gaming headset in the video, while playing the video game. “Yeah, we’ve been playing some really good teams. You know, I’m feeling it right now.”

Through seven games, Thompson-Robinson has completed a career-high 73.8% of his pass attempts for 1,772 yards, 17 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He has also rushed for 267 yards and four touchdowns. UCLA (6-1) is ranked No. 12 in the latest AP Top 25 poll.

In the video, an actor who’s wearing a Crash Bandicoot costume jumps into view.

“Wait a minute,” Thompson-Robinson says. “Aye, you’re Crash Bandicoot, aren’t you?”

The future of partnerships with video game publishers

With “EA Sports College Football” scheduled for a July 2023 release, following a hiatus of EA Sports’ college football video games after the release of “NCAA Football 14,” there could soon be an increase in NIL deals between college athletes and video game publishers.

The players whose names, images and likenesses will be used in “EA Sports College Football” will agree to participate in the video game through a group licensing partner, but EA Sports could also partner with specific, high-profile players to promote its release.

The player who’s chosen to appear on the cover of the video game will likely receive additional compensation on top of the agreed-upon group licensing terms.

“I think that we absolutely will see a massive uptick in video game promotion amongst athletes just given the fact that the engagement rates amongst their audiences is going to be their friends who they’re playing the games with and things like that,” Syal said. “So 100%. I mean, group rights and group licensing is going to be a major component of this. We could also see, as the metaverse continues to expand, basically player profiles or player avatars be associated with group rights as well.”

Through some creative video editing, Thompson-Robinson appears in the video game world.

“What is this place, dude?” Thompson-Robinson says.

The actor playing Crash Bandicoot responds, “Hey man, it’s my homeland.”

The opening scene of Thompson-Robinson’s TikTok video said “Part I” and he will post two more parts as part of the partnership. Other athletes will share Thompson-Robinson’s video, plus create their own content, too.

Scouting the opponent: Arizona State struggling through a trying season

Here's the weekly look at Colorado's upcoming opponent. This week, it's Arizona State. The Sun Devils have some talent, but they've struggled mightily this season and, like CU, made an in-season coaching change. I wonder when the last time was that two interim coaches faced each other in a game taking place before November. Maybe it's never happened

Mike Sanford hopes to recreate that 'Folsom magic' this weekend

The Buffs take on the Sun Devils at home this Saturday and both teams are assessing their situations at quarterback. Regardless of who takes the start, “I think Saturday night, 5 o’clock is going to be a fantastic football game,” Sanford said.
