Mat Ishbia among two donors providing $24 million to Michigan State coach Mel Tucker's salary

A pair of wealthy Michigan State alums — including billionaire Mat Ishbia — have made gifts to cover $24 million of the $95 million, fully guaranteed contract to head football coach Mel Tucker, according to documents released by the university on Thursday. Tucker inked the deal with Michigan State at the tail end of an 11-2 2021 season and it was announced and reported that Ishbia, along with Steven St. Andre, had donated notable sums to help cover the new deal.
Now, following a lawsuit from The Detroit Free Press that compelled Michigan State to release the donor contracts under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), the details of these gifts — and any conditions included — are public. All told, Michigan State is on the hook for $71 million over the course of the 10-year contract after the combined gifts from Ishbia and St. Andre.
Ishbia revealed on a recent episode of HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel that he had donated $14 million to the Tucker contract, which the docs confirm. St. Andre’s gift is for $10 million.
The documents, which are contracts spelling out the terms and timelines of the gifts from Ishbia and St. Andre, do not directly state the money is supposed to cover Tucker’s salary. In the case of St. Andre’s donation, the purpose is for “recruitment and retention” for the Michigan State football team.
Ishbia, a former basketball walk-on under Tom Izzo, has his gift directed to the football program and men’s basketball program.
Michigan State signed Tucker to the 10 year, $95 million contract extension in late November of 2021. At the time, Michigan State was at the business end of a double-digit win season and it was rumored that Tucker was a consideration for the then open LSU head coach gig.
It was reported at the time of the extension that Ishbia, St. Andre and perhaps some additional alumni had pooled resources to help make the contract happen, though the exact amount they chipped in was not clear.
Now, after being compelled by Michigan courts to show their hand, the full picture of what’s offset and what Michigan State is responsible for paying is in clear focus.

Potential offense in '23

QB - Shedeur
RB - Hankerson, Edwards, Smith, Stacks
WR - Tyson, *Coleman, MLC, Hopkins, *Horn, Hunter (few packages, two way CB)
TE - Fauria, Olsen, and... ?

LT - Washington (transfer, 1st team all mac)
LG - Tyler Brown (transfer, hbcu all am.)
C - Wells (freshman all am.)
RG - Tommy Brown (Stud)
RT - Jatta ( juco all am) or Filip or Wiley or someone who isn't in Boulder yet

*All assuming we bring Coleman from JSU and Horn III

... And this is just the beginning. By summer camp this will more than likely include a few more transfers / late signees at RB/WR/TE

Should be pretty damn competitive right out of the gates! A lot of fun to watch at very least with Lewis' high tempo run and gun offense

Definitely need a bruiser RB still, like 6'2" 225lbs type. Stacks isn't gonna cut it in goal line situations.

TE's are young, but highly rated out of HS. We'll see.

O Line got real beefy. Lots of experience, too. Should be improved vs last year

Now just gotta get Purchase, Mcclain, Harris, and other transfers to bolster up the defense and we should be a bowl team right away...

Did i miss anyone??? Geeking out over here. The hype is real...
