Colorado WR Jimmy Horn Jr. building a brotherhood with fellow Buffs

With Jimmy Horn Jr.’s notable speed, he is adapting well with Colorado’s fast-paced offense.

“I know I’m the fastest. I got about 10 different gears, I only use three of them.”

Defensive coordinator Charles Kelly discusses his approach to his first spring with the Buffs

Nikki is on the road, so I'm posting here on her behalf. Here's her story off the Charles Kelly interview today, and we have a Jimmy Horn story coming too:

SMU is going to kick our rear ends!!!

From Jon Wilner:
That’s right: SMU’s football potential is greater than any of the remaining 10 schools, save for Oregon, Washington and perhaps Utah.

Why do I say that?

Because SMU is located in a football hotbed with dozens of blue-chip prospects within a short drive of campus.

Because it’s a private school that can funnel resources as desired, with no bureaucratic impediments.

And because it has immense donor support, with a huge endowment ($2 billion) and wealthy alumni.

As one source told the Hotline: “Besides USC and Oregon, nobody in the conference could beat SMU’s resources.”

Our sense is that membership in the Pac-12 would provide the school — and its donor base — with the motivation to plow resources into the football program (hello, NIL!) and eventually lead to success that’s currently difficult to envision.

Does that mean the Mustangs would become a power? No. But they could quickly become a top-half football program within the reconstituted Pac-12.

New Buffs QB Shedeur Sanders 'ready' for a Power 5 offense

Still early days in spring practice, but at this point in time, one of the few known factors for the Buffs is Shedeur Sanders' gifts at quarterback.

“Shedeur is ready,” Jimmy Horn Jr. said. “Don’t let that HBCU stuff fool you."

Spring Practice Day 2: DC Charles Kelly and Jimmy Horn Jr.

My quick takeaways:
  • Travis Hunter making a splash in practice.
  • Shedeur Sanders is executing at the power five level
  • Kelly said the defense is more implementing than they are experimenting. They are experimenting, moving some guys around in the secondary and guys up front. Kelly and the staff are evaluating the players closely.
  • DT Sal Sunseri is a real asset for Colorado. He's developed some OLB draft classes back in the day.
  • Jimmy Horn Jr. claims he's the fastest on the team.
  • Buffs are having some intense practices, even Horn is tired after them.

CU Football Notes: Travis Hunter at receiver, first practice 'up-tempo'

Lots of notes from yesterday's presser. Check out my notes and takeaways from the first practice of many in the Coach Prime era ⬇️

CU, WR commit part ways

Three-star receiver Daijon Calimon has backed off his commitment to Colorado today. The reality is this has been in the works. He committed to CU before the arrival of Deion Sanders and Armond Hawkins Jr. was a big reason for that. When the new staff came on board there was interest but he had not been a top priority either. He didn't get to meet Sanders on his January visit with the Buffs and it seemed like there had been lukewarm feelings on the part of the Buffs. So, this is not a surprise and really is a mutual parting of ways. The Buffs simply have higher priorities. He would have been a nice piece, but CU is aiming higher in this class.

Spring practice pressers: Takeaways and videos

You really never know what to expect from Coach Prime. He rolled in on his custom segway with a cowboy boots and hat to match. He explained his love for the show Yellowstone. Along with the modern western entrance here's some of my quick takeaways: (Apologies for all the typing, sitting next to a writer on deadline 😅)

  • The players graded themselves today. Today's grade was C. They felt they could do better understanding the tempo and processes of the practice. First day jitters, everyone is learning how to operate and perform with each other in an up-tempo practice.
  • Spring break not ideal for Coach Prime
  • Coach is looking for consistency out of Shedeur. "Third offense in three years." Today Shedeur worked with the wide receivers (of course) and throwing for the first time against CU's defense. Today was just day one of improving his mechanics and learning from what the film portrays.
  • Travis Hunter was playing on the offensive side of the ball.
  • "If you got a double number in college that was sure you weren't going to play." Sanders on the players earning their numbers.
  • 6:20 in the video, Sanders goes through today's practice and practice script
  • Sanders "really likes" how Sean Lewis is working with Shedeur

Spring preview: Buffs' defensive front stacked with strength and experience

Similar to the offensive line, Sanders and his staff brought in 5 senior/grad transfers to bulk up the front. Full preview on the group:

JR Payne: Establishing a culture of belief for CU women's basketball

Under JR Payne's leadership, Colorado finds themselves dancing once again, this time against No. 11 seed Middle Tennessee. Colorado's success in the last two seasons wasn't miraculous, it was years in the making through the blue-collar work ethic Payne has instilled in the program since 2016.

This is one of my favorite stories I've written so far. Really great to sit down with Payne and her husband Toriano Towns, who's the assistant head coach, to gain a full scope of what they've built.
