Film Review: Colorado vs Arizona State

Another film review installment here at CUSportsNation.com. I give my thoughts about four plays - 2 good, 2 bad - from CU's 41-30 loss to ASU.

This play was Arizona State's go-ahead touchdown to give them the lead at 34-30, and this was a horrible display of defense. ASU obviously wore Colorado down and there wasn't much effort on this play as you key on a few different guys. First, watch Rick Gamboa on this play; he's the inside linebacker near the top of the screen. ASU's running back runs exactly where Gamboa was lined up, but Gamboa runs to his left and allows ASU's TE to easily block him. Then he jogs downfield to watch the RB get into the end zone. Pretty bad play from Gamboa and I'm sure he's hearing about it in the CU film room. Next up is Nick Fisher, who should have stopped this run for a six yard gain. He was unblocked but went after the RB with a wimpy arm tackle at the 13 yard line, and Laguda came flying in with a missed arm tackle as well. Drew Lewis just sat in his spot after the ball was snapped and allowed the ASU O-lineman to pancake him. The interior defensive linemen for CU were pushed five yards back. This was just a really embarrassing play by a very tired Colorado defense.

ASU's inside linebacker went unblocked but he was too slow to get to Lindsay, who darted into the endzone. Beau Bisharat made the key block to lead PL and Aaron Haigler pulled to clear space for PL. Good straight up blocking by Frazier and Bounds as well. Just a solid goal line run off the left side for a Colorado touchdown. This one isn't rocket science. Just good old school power football.

I shlowed this one down to show the blocking develop. You have to LOVE Haigler's block pulling and laying out the ASU defender. This play also had a pull by RT Josh Kaiser, who didn't have a huge block like Haigler, but he did his job kicking out a defender. A key to this being a scoring play was Jeromy Irwin getting off of his double team with Gerrad Kough and blocking the ASU linebacker at the second level. Textbook blocking and a good cut by PL to get up the field. Final thought: what the heck was George Frazier doing? Lol it looks like he's supposed to block on the backside but he avoids it instead.

Another not so good play by the Colorado defense. You can watch Dante Wigley the whole play, and he never gets his head around to find the ball. Not for a second. Good throw by Wilkins and an excellent play on the ball by Harry for an easy touchdown. Wigley shows promise but the Buffs really missed Isaiah Oliver in this one.

Recruiting update

Mike-

I’ve seen a lot of fear over our recent play losing us recruits. That’s alwaa a concern for a lot of us I think when we underachieve. Have you had any indication that any of our current recruits are wavering. I read about Culver but that seemed less about him waivering and more about him just attracting more attention. Just curious about any we should be concerned about. Thanks

The future of the DL?

This coaching staff doesn't appear to have a plan when it comes to the DL pipeline! What are they going to do? I think they will have to hit the JC ranks but those guys typically need a year before they are ready to be above average players (we don't have the recruiting power to bring in immediate studs). The few young guys have need 2-3 years before they will be ready other than Lang.

After next year this is our DL (2019 season)...

Lang (will be a SO)
Roberts (will be a JR)
Tuiloma (will be a SR)
Sami (will be a SO)
Finau (2018 recruit will likely be a redshirt freshman)

This is our pipeline...5 scholarship players...and what if we lose 1 or 2 to attrition?

This isn't getting any better.

This is nuts

Two weeks ago we weren't going to win again.
After beating an absolutely horrid cal team we were going bowling and just maybe could win out
Coaches really turned the corner
Really coaching well
We will lose by 30-35 next two games
Coaches all should go
HCMM is losing his marbles and is on edge and maybe is going to go postal
Next year we will be even worse
We have nothing coming back and its like being in the Fairbanks era

Guys this stuff is just crazy. Our players blew the third game they should have won this year last night. We don't have any defensive depth and for some reason our senior WR have been pretty darn pedestrian this year. Our QB is young and has been very up and down. PL has been great. Our Oline has been really good and really bad at times. Our depleted defensive backfield has still done a solid job.

Our coaches have coached well for most of the season and put these kids in a position to be 7-3 or even 8-2 at this point with 6-6 talent. Unfortunately the 6-6 talent has shown through despite some good play calling and use of personnel.

I really hope we beat Utah. They are not as good as ASU and we had ASU. Can we? Man I don't know and will be really bummed if we dont win at least 6. I really thought this team could win 7 when i looked at the schedule pre season.

I dont think though that CU football is even in the realm of Fairbanks.
Our coaches do not remotely suck (though some change is absolutely needed to recruiting).
Our offense is decent and our defense has played as well as we can expect that group to play.
Will we be worse next year? I dont think so. Looks like a 7 win schedule to me just like this year did. Hopefully next year we execute which is something our players have failed to do this year. We have some good young talent and I think we hold on to most of our recruits. We have a massive problem on Dline. There is no sugar coating that but we are pretty damn solid in lots of other places. Right now we look like a team that wins 6-8 most years. We have to fix recruiting to get to 8-9 level. Hopefully thats the change that is coming but man we gotta lose the bipolar overreactions both ways

Defense next year . . .

Could actually be worse!!!!! Look at the depth chart. Besides Lewis in the front 7, can you name more than one player that we can count on based on this year? The entire DL is more than comical and the only guy we would want is graduating (Jackson). ONE . . . that's right, ONE LB is worth a damn and we have no experience for any of the underclassmen that can point to a better D.

YOU THINK THIS IS A DISASTER . . . WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR.

THE TALENT ON THE DEFENSIVE FRONT 7 IS CRIMINAL AND WE DON'T HAVE ANYONE WITH EXPERIENCE (OR WHO HAS VERBALED) THAT WILL MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF MEEEEE!!!!!
