This had already been known from previous reporting via the Rivals national team, but everything is a go for UCF defensive tackle commit Christian Hudson to take his official visit to Colorado this weekend. The high three-star prospect was offered by CU a month ago and the Buffs have been making a big move for the 2025 prospect from Daytona Beach.

Below are some mid-season senior highlights.

The chain

Is it just me, or do others also have the feeling that it's simply crazy for SS to be donning that gold chain during games? I kept worrying that some KSU player would grab it from the back during a tackle with a hanging choke hold. It could be ugly. If I were running the team, I wouldn't let anybody who was on the field wear something like that.

CU extra point / team shift question

Maybe this always happens, but I did not notice it until last night. When the buffs lineup for the extra point, the ref was holding the ball beforethe shift (no chance of running a play in that formation), then, after the shift, the ref was still holding the ball and they couldn't snap it until the ref let go and moved back into position.. If this correct, the buffs could never try a 2 point conversion in that pressnap formation.. I don't recall seeing this before, can someone explain?

Impacts of NIL and the Portal

NIL and heavy portal movement are in transisiton, likely to look much different in the near future. But where we stand now, there are some aspects of their impact that haven't been discussed much. Here are three, ones where I'm not clear what the NIL/portal impact has been and might go:

Participation Levels in Football
A number of studies have shown a steady decline in the number of high school boys participating in football. While a few states (Alabama, Mississippi, Texas) have shown increased player participation, most have shown steady declines, and in some cases (California, Michigan, North Carolina, Illinois) they have been steep. The question I have is whether the opportunity for NIL cash rewards, and the publicity about NIL (and potentially collective bargaining paydays in the future) will encourage higher levels of high school football participation. For struggling families, or kids who see the gold chains and bling available for 18-year-old college students, football could be seen as a quick means to that end.

Portal impact on GPI levels and Team APR Scores
I'm unclear on how athlete GPI levels and team APR scores are impacted by heavy portal use. The NCAA still has sanctions in place for schools with low APR scores, and it's unclear to me how those rates are calculated with players bouncing around from school to school. The most recent football APR rates I could find were from 2022-23, with CU having a score of 960, 90th nationally and 14th in the Big-12. I wonder how APR levels will fit with the the emerging pay-for-play transfer pattern.

Portal and NIL Impact on Team Cohesion
This is an area I've wondered about. It used to be that football team character would change when the head coach changed, but otherwise, was pretty considtent. A number of very successful college coaches built their success by having a solid, consistent team culture, with shared value systems and year-to-year continuity. Dabo Sweeney, Kyle Whittingham, Nick Saban, Dave Clauson, Pat Narduzzi, and Matt Campbell are coaches who fit this mold. However, high levels of player changover through the portal must take a toll on this team personality, along with the sudden emergence of some players being flush with money, and all that goes with it. Some coaches like Sweeney have attempted to avoid the portal, but in doing so, may be at a disadvantage talent-wise. It seems that the fundamental character of college football teams is changing with NIL and the portal.

Takeaways: CU hit with adversity in loss to No. 18 Kansas State

Colorado’s performance against No. 18 Kansas State wasn’t perfect, and ultimately that's what cost it the game, but the Buffs were faced with having to overcome a number of hurdles Saturday night.

My takeaways from last night's loss:

10.12.24 Undefeated and bowl eligible teams

Again I have done this type thread for the past few years:

Army 6-0 (Bowl eligible)
BYU 6-0 (Bowl eligible)
Indiana 6-0 (Bowl eligible)
Iowa State 6-0 (Bowl eligible)
Miami 6-0 (Bowl eligible)
Oregon 6-0 (Bowl eligible)
Penn State 6-0 (Bowl eligible)
Pittsburgh 6-0 (Bowl eligible)
Texas 6-0 (Bowl eligible)

Undefeated but not bowl eligible
Liberty 5-0
Navy 5-0

There are 24 teams with 5 wins, the winner of the CU game will be 25th and if Boise wins they will be 26th

They have to fix targeting.

This is just stupid at this point. Calls are inconstant - Miami wins by not having it called and now UA loses thier best guy all day for the call.

You can’t call it consistently correctly and it’s been shown over and over. Then when you do get it right you have to fix this and
Make the first one just a penalty. Second one toss him rest of the game and leave the red card rule in effect
