Updates from Sanford

  • Anthony Hankerson "could've played," on Saturday. Sanford wanted to get Alex Fontenot suited up to get him back into the flow of playing. Fontenot will most likely have his first carries since the injury this Saturday against the Ducks
  • Long snapper Cameron Warchuck suffered a, "fairly significant leg injury," but he threw on a leg brace and snapped the rest of the game on Saturday. He sustained the injury the first snap of the game according to Sanford.
  • Along with reviewing the film and going over the game today, they did a trick or treating event with the coaches and their kids and each position group was a different "house."
  • Players who graded out against ASU: Jalen Sami, Terrance Lang, Josh Chandler-Semedo, Trevor Woods, Deion Smith, Jayle Stacks, Casey Roddick, Austin Johnson, Gerad Christian-Lichtenhan
  • Jordyn Tyson set the all-time CU all purpose record for a true freshman
  • Daniel Arias was, "phenomenal on special teams." He was nursing an injury leading up to the game.

Fans get first look at CU basketball team in exhibition win over Nebraska

A Sunday afternoon exhibition with Colorado provided fans with their first look at -- and perhaps some answers from -- this reshaped Colorado basketball team, as the Buffs beat visiting Nebraska, 72-61.

“Once our guys settle in and feel a little bit more comfortable and confident out there, I like this team. I’ve said that from the get-go," Boyle said.

Pac-12 fall meetings: University presidents gather with huge issues on the agenda

Pac-12 presidents and chancellors will meet Monday in San Francisco as they do every year at this time, just never with an agenda like the one currently before them.

No, they are not expected to vote on a new media rights contract, although there will be updates from commissioner George Kliavkoff.

And no, USC president Carol Folt and UCLA chancellor Gene Block won’t participate for any portion of the meeting given their planned moves to the Big Ten in 2024.

Typically, the fall meetings include a gathering of the presidents, athletic directors and conference executives, then a session with only the presidents and high-level conference staff.

This year, the athletic directors are expected to join remotely, with only the local duo, Cal’s Jim Knowlton and Stanford’s Bernard Muir, appearing in person.

The agenda will include many of the topics covered every year, including operational, financial, legal and NCAA updates. But three additional items reflect the dynamic state of college sports generally and Pac-12 survival specifically.

Kliavkoff and his executive staff will brief the presidents on:

— The University of California Board of Regents’ ongoing review of UCLA’s entry into the Big Ten.

The regents, who are scheduled to meet Nov. 15-17 in San Francisco, have the authority to block the move, slap UCLA with a financial penalty or let the Bruins join the Big Ten unencumbered.

— The latest on College Football Playoff expansion.

The event will grow to 12 teams for the 2026 season, but FBS commissioners are attempting to solve complicated logistical issues in time for expansion to be implemented for either 2024 or 2025.

Washington State president Kirk Schulz, who represents the Pac-12 on the CFP’s Board of Managers, will undoubtedly have insight on this matter.

— The Pac-12’s media rights negotiations.

Although the negotiations likely are closer to the finish than start, the presidents aren’t expected to formalize an agreement.

A conclusion is weeks away, at least, as the Pac-12 waits for a resolution on UCLA’s move to the Big Ten.

Once the conference and potential media partners have full clarity on the Bruins’ future, contract details can be presented to the presidents for approval.

At this point, it does not appear the Big Ten is on the verge of offering membership to Washington, Oregon, Stanford and Cal; nor does it appear that a jump to the Big 12 is imminent for Arizona, ASU, Utah and Colorado.

However, the situation is highly fluid until the 10 remaining schools sign a media rights contract.

The conference’s two longtime partners, ESPN and Fox, have interest in Pac-12 football and basketball, according to sources.

ESPN needs inventory for the valuable 7:30 p.m. (PT) kickoff, and perhaps for windows on ESPN+. Meanwhile, Fox has approximately 22 time slots currently allocated to Pac-12 football that would need to be filled by another means if the network completely abandons its partnership with the conference.

Amazon and Apple are believed to have interest in the Pac-12, as well. The streaming giants don’t produce their own events but could use the Pac-12 Network’s cutting-edge infrastructure for that purpose.

Game thread: Colorado-Nebraska basketball exhibition

It's only an exhibition, but we figured we'd do a live thread for anyone interested in what takes place today between Colorado and Nebraska men's basketball. The Huskers aren't particularly good, coming off a 10-22 finish last season, and they've been widely picked as the last-place team in the Big Ten

Mostly just excited to have some basketball to watch and I know given the difficulties of this football season, a lot of Buffs fans probably feel the same way. So feel free to chime in if you're here and want to share your thoughts. Or if you have any questions about what's going on this afternoon, let us know

Weekend visitors: CU vs. ASU

Here's a look at the recruits who have indicated they will be visiting Colorado this weekend for the game against ASU. These lists are always subject to change. As of now California WR/DB Jordan Shaw is the only prospect set to take an official visit this weekend. He has some big offers on the table, but his recruitment hasn't been as active this season as it was early in the year. There will certainly be an opportunity for the Buffs to make a strong impression on him.

With SC gone (my take)

When Colorado joined the Pac 12, it didn’t realize what it was getting into. Personally, I wasn’t aware of how thoroughly USC dominated the conference. As far as the media was concerned, the Trojans are the Pac 12. Every conversation about the conference begins with SC.

The Trojans have been beating up these Pac 12 weaklings for 100 years. So much so that there’s sort of a Stockholm Syndrome going on where many school have given up competing against the Cardinal and Gold juggernaut. I asked a Rivals writer who covers Cal why they haven’t competed better against SC over the years and his answer was simply that they take it more seriously than Cal does.

With SC leaving the conference it’s going be very interesting to see how the Pac evolves once its big boy is gone. As an outsider coming in, I saw the conference as very solid top to bottom. The Arizona schools, Washington won a NC, and CU in recent years has been dominated by Oregon. I just didn’t fully appreciate the extent of the dominance SC had over the conference. It extends back decades and decades.

SC, which admires Notre Dame so much, should have taken the independent route a long time ago. In fact, if the Big 10 plan turns out to be too onerous, they should become an independent and live on their own media deal just like the Irish ($75 million a year).

But to be honest, I can’t wait to see what the Pac 12 evolves into. It’s good football. And with the additions of SDSU and SMU it’s going to be even better in that the Pac will be truly balanced with an extended footprint.

Colorado coaching hot board: Ranking the candidates in the Buffs' search

As promised, here's my list of candidates for the CU coaching vacancy. It's mentioned in the story, but an important caveat here is that these are candidates I'd look at if I were the AD (which I'm obviously not). It's not necessarily who I think Rick George will choose

I had been compiling this list for a couple of weeks, once it became clear Dorrell wasn't going to be in Boulder too much longer, but if you've got any questions about the lists, candidates I included or didn't include, or whatever else, please don't hesitate to hit me up.

This is going to be a months' long search, so our plan is to update this board periodically based on any developments, reports or things that we learn

Official Game Thread CU vs ASU

Greetings everyone, a chilly evening for some football. The Buffs and the Sun Devils kickoff at 5:30 tonight. Deion Smith and Anthony Hankerson are both suited up during warmups, but Smith is not listed on the running back lineup for today. Alex Fontenot is suited up as well, if he does play, he'll probably have limited carries.

Owen McCown is also suited up even though J.T. Shrout is the starter for today. Drew Carter at backup.

ASU will start QB Trenton Bourguet this evening, but if he's not playing well Emory Jones is likely to come in.

I'm sticking with CU 20 ASU 14 and @Craig Meyer has ASU 24 CU 16

Early expectations, score predictions, thoughts for tonight's game? ⬇️

Transcript: Everything Mike Sanford said after Colorado's loss to Arizona State

We've got a full transcript of Mike Sanford's post-game press conference. He discussed, among other things, CU's defensive woes, Jordyn Tyson's big day, plans for Owen McCown and a possible redshirt, J.T. Shrout's performance and more

Today's Games

Some good games.

TCU still in the lead. Neither team looks great but TCU keeps finding a way to win which is always fun as it might cause a mess in the playoff.
FSU beating a really bad GT team.

Sadly ND getting it done against a massively overrated Syracuse team. Can’t win them all.

But happiness abounds —

Pedo State hung tough but finally Ohio State taking over and order is restored in the universe. (Now if PSU can just lose for the rest of eternity we will be close to real Justice).

Pretty ugly slate of games today.

Will keep track of teams Im hoping win today later:
KSU - hard to root against the mullet but I like an underdog

Wake - this could be a solid game
Tennessee - hoping to catch some of this one live this evening. Should be a great game and I like UT.
Illinois - hope Bielema does well there
Ole Miss - Can’t help myself dad. I’m sorry. I love State but can’t not root for the Lane Train
CU - hoping when I watch taped later it will be close and some good moments
UCLA - should roll but how do they respond against a perennially bad Stanford team that seems to be opportunistic each year against teams not paying attention.

Four-star forward Assane Diop sets announcement date

Four-star 2023 forward Assane Diop will be announcing his college commitment on Nov. 15. The 6-foot-10 Diop, who plays at Accelerated Prep in Lakewood, will be deciding between CU, Arkansas and Seton Hall. He'll be making the announcement along with his teammate Baye Fall, who is down to Arkansas, Rutgers, Auburn and Seton Hall

Diop is rated as the No. 110 player in the 2023 class, though ESPN has him at No. 56. Fall is the higher-rated of the two prospects, at No. 11 on Rivals, but Diop would obviously be a huge get for Tad Boyle and his staff. Rivals' FutureCast has Diop at 100% to Arkansas, so we'll see how things play out in a couple of weeks
