Official Game Thread: CU vs. WSU

Helloo, got a LATE one tonight. Buffs in Pullman taking on the Cougars. Troy and I anticipate this being quite the shootout in this matchup.

According to Brian Howell who's on the ground in Pullman: Colorado playing tonight without LB/S Trevor Woods. Buffs also without RB Kavosiey Smoke, CB Omarion Cooper, LB Brendan Gant, PK Jace Feely and safeties Myles Slusher and Vito Tisdale. LaVonta Bentley, Demouy Kennedy and Marvin Ham are the only linebackers in uniform.

Starting O-line: Gerad Christian-Lichtenhan, Jack Bailey, Van Wells, Kareem Harden and Savion Washington

Our score predictions: Troy: Colorado 37, Washington State 35 Nikki: Colorado 38, Washington State 35

ESPN got this wrong

JMU did not get screwed. The rule against bowls for new teams has been in place for everyone.
It’s there because you get two years of extra scholarships to build up your program. It’s a bad look for ESPN and the JMU coach.
You know the rules. Good for you thet you are undefeated. Keep building and in year 3 make an NY6.

And for god sakes Macafee - either leave the shirt on or get a trainer. Awful

Sad day for Seminole Nation

FSU has always been my first football love. My dad what there. I went there before CU and I grew up loving them.
Jordan Travis out with what looks like a big injury.
They have a couple studs behind them but they are young and green. Thought this was the year to go playoffs and maybe get to the championship. Sadly without him it isn’t happening.
They are stacked for the future with another great class this year and great TP guys already.
Norvell may be boring and it took him 3 years but he’s old school and old school is what works. It’s all that works.

Hopeful Reflections and Maybe Changes after Utah

I think most expect/demand a lot of changes after next week, what is likely or realistic based on what we know about Prime and the CU ability to pay:

  • Get rid of Lewis and OB - The OL has been nothing short of horrendous and multiple analysts have pointed out that technique and positioning is terrible. Even with the awful OL talent, there should have been some improvement. The play-calling and schemes have likewise been pretty awful after TCU (except for a few quarters here and there.) Lewis cannot adjust or won't. Either way, these two obviously have to go. Then of course, who comes in? What qualified OC is available and would come to a circus atmosphere? What legit OL coach will come with talent that is so deficient?;
  • Kelly - I think Kelly is retained. Would be fine if he was gone, but I think Prime has way too much respect for him and seems to blame players making mistakes in execution than he does on Kelly calling the right plays/schemes. Unlike the Offense which I think has gotten worse and worse as the season went on, the Defense did marginally improve even with the lack of playmakers and talent. They are never going to be able to shut down Pac 12 offenses if CUs offense continually stalls.
  • Focus on HS recruiting - a team filled with transfers is not the answer. It's great to plug some holes, but not to build talent in a program. Plus, unless you are one of the elite programs, a great/good transfer is not coming to a team that doesn't know how to win. If they're a really good player, they are looking to transfer to a team that will contend. Otherwise, you get unproven players where there is a reason they haven't played. Okay for some depth, but you can see from our OL, DL and LBs that the portal is not a way to bring in all starters.
  • Kickers - MUST find kickers that can kick the ball out of the damn endzone and not force us to punt or go for it on 4th down if the FG is over 35 yards. Just can't have that and just embarrassing at our elevation. Mata seems like a sweet kid, but he should not be at this level.
  • Recruit TEs - I don't care if you want to run a spread offense, you have to have some legit TEs that can block. Not a single legit TE on the team. Harrison is a nice big WR, but he is not a real TE.
  • Position Coaches - I can't tell who is good here, who knows how to develop, etc., but I just hope that Prime will be willing to make changes to some of his guys who have followed him from JSU IF they are not legit recruiters. No position group particularly developed all that well, can't tell if it's just such pathetic talent or bad coaching . . . in any case, I'd swap any of them if they are stud HS recruiters.
  • Prime - use your connections for advice in earnest. This is his first year coaching in P5 and it showed. Clock management, situational awareness, play calling, etc. have been questionable at best, downright baffling too many times. It's okay to call your buddy Saban (or any other CFB head coach that is a proven commodity) and ask about best-practices, tips, who he can watch to get better, etc.
  • Get players to play for COLORADO and not just their @ - in this brave new world of NIL and the TP, there is definitely an uptick in the mercenary mindset and showing off cars, bling, etc. is now just what comes with it. But, it would be nice if there was some self-awareness that this is not a good team and maybe showing off chains, watches, cars, etc. when you win 4 games, creates a culture where winning does not matter - need a culture where winning games is all that matters, and IF you win, THEN you get to show off your spoils. As has been discussed elsewhere, and while some disagree, it does not feel like there is attachment or pride with being a Buff opposed to just @ exposure. Nothing more of a turn-off than losers showing off.

Interesting perspective

Article attached is interesting. I think it’s how most fans feel. Ignore some glaring alarms, don’t care if we win or lose, heck don’t much care about the game. It’s the party. It’s getting noticed. It’s the celebrities. It’s about being cool now and Colorado being on the map.

All good things if you make money off of it. Is it enough for most to ignore what may be harder to fix than many assume and take longer than anyone who isn’t educated on football expected? So far it seems so.
I’ll be interested to see what the articles say next year.

How important is tonight???

Been thinking and I think tonight is pivotal. Win and we stop the losing slide, get to 5 wins and bring a little energy back to recruiting. Lose and we have lost 6 strait (we all no Utah is 98% a loss). WE finish with only one PAC12 win just like last year, and finish 11th in the league. I believe it will even kill recruiting more, and makes this hole even harder to get out of....

OT: Fishing intel

My partner is back in town for the week form wilderness awareness school in Washington and said she might want to go fishing with me tomorrow.
Anyone been fishing the Blue recently and if so how’s it hitting and what are those spooky guys eating?
Same question around the Vail area too.
I’m thinking we head up that way so we can grab some hiking and maybe even some skiing if we stay the night and she thinks fishing is more fun than she finds actual fishing in the cold to be. Lol

Enjoy your Saturday

This thing sadly has played to script all year and we find ourselves with a broken machine and no idea if we have any of the correct mechanics to fix it.

I’ve run out of things to analyze or debate. If people don’t see it now then they aren’t going to. We just have to hope something changes and there are brighter days ahead.

Last really nice weekend for a bit it appears. Time to enjoy the outdoors, get to the river, then come back and watch the big games late today. Need some nature and then some real P5 football to forget about the state of CU for a while.

Hope you all enjoy the games and the weather. Utah will be here soon enough

Roundtable: A potential shootout looms as CU and WSU battle for a win

Two more games remain in the first season of the Deion Sanders era, and Colorado is looking to get back in the win column against Washington State after claiming its fourth consecutive loss last week against Arizona.

Troy and I share our thoughts on tonight's matchup:

University of Arizona financial crisis

Looks like someone in the finance department forgot to carry the 1 when they did their forecast math. I hope we have better people doing forecasts here as we are very comparable schools. Will be interesting to see what effect this has on athletics particularly with Jed Fisch becoming a hot commodity.
