Can Somebody Explain How Roster Management Works With Current Players and Transfers/Recruits?

We all saw the video on PT telling the current roster "we comin'" and "I'm gonna make you quit" etc etc. Great. Prime Time was hired to bring in transfers and recruit talent, not mold the current 1-11 team in title contenders. Everybody knows that.

But . . . how does it actually work? This isn't "roster adjusting" on the margins. . . this is a wholesale culling of the herd. We're bringing in a slew of transfers and recruits, but can only put 85 guys on the roster. Suppose the guys he wants to "quit" . . . don't wanna quit? Can he really run that many guys off? Suppose they want to stick around despite Coach PT's directive that they won't see the field and best look elsewhere?

I should know this, but I don't. But it seems like we're bringing a bunch of transfers on the "assumption" that there will be attrition among the current roster. How does "involuntary attrition" happen?

momentum building

How many teams are still gaining momentum after early signing. THe buffs definitely seem to be. CAn't wait to see what new freshmen and transfers are going to be Buffs before spring ball. This is incredible and totally foreign to us Buff fans who have been disappointed thanks to terrible leadership for 20 years. Good football players want to run on the field behind Ralphie if we can just not slam the door in their face. I hope our incredibly wealthy alumni step up to keep the momentum going. We need an NIL war chest to keep kicking sand in all the bully faces now that the university has come to understand the value of great athletics to the overall University. CU scares many perennial big dogs because they know if we quit getting in our own way, we will be a force with whom only a few schools can contend.

Next year will be a year to knock on the door. 2024 a year to knock the door down. Boom! Go Buffs - 20 years of frustration to purge.

Kansas vs. Ar*Kansas

Great game. Two teams separated by 2 letters and won by 2 points in 3 OTs. Both teams came in with the same record (6-6) and came out with equal amount of respect. Makes me yearn for clever offensive coordination. Can't imagine CU scoring 50+ points against anyone.

My only gripe, ESPN gave offensive player of the game award to Jefferson with 3 minutes left. Had not seen the whole game, but thought handing out an award that early seemed fool hearty. Yes, Arkansas was up by 15 points but winning was definitely no lock. I thought to myself, what if the KU QB pulls out a miracle. How stupid would giving that award look!?! That almost came to fruition as KU made a miracle comeback and almost won the game. Their QB Daniels might have been the player of the game regardless. Both players were at worst equally deserving and the winner should win it. Stupid, stupid, stupid, to award someone player of the game before the game is finished. Especially that early!

Utah

Anyone know who KW brought onto the staff or what changes they made? They have worked the TP well and developed kids but overall recruiting has been around 35 or so under him. Decent and respectable but not great.
This year they are currently 20 and much mor importantly are 23 in quality of recruit with 8 4 stars. They’ve been in the high 50s and last year 61 (compared to the silly overall ranking of 37 because they had a bunch of bodies).
On field results help but there has just been this feeling of building momentum the last couple years with them. I don’t know much about the staff but it’s interesting to watch.

With USC and UCLA leaving and the rest of us probably fighting for one of the other 4 that is likely to be taken from the PAC I see Utah as our biggest competitor. We aren’t in the same place as UW or OU but we do match up well with Utah and that’s going to be a big “rivalry” moving forward in the new PAC is my guess

Freshman kicker Alejandro Mata is joining some of his teammates and coaches making the move from Jackson State to CU. A really impressive specialist with a few more seasons of eligibility.

New & Current Players Chemistry

This will be fascinating to watch and see how HCCP and staff navigate the new "We Coming" and "Bringing LV" players with the current players. As awesome as he is doing in the portal and some HS recruits, there are 85 scholarship players on the team, so far 12-14 Portal/Juco commits (2 have not signed) and 16 HS commits.

Generally, history for CFB shows that usually the portal/JC guys will be more ready to play because they have put something on tape that shows that they can play at a higher level. Usually only a handful of True Freshmen contribute beyond ST because of the physical maturity and getting acquainted to a new environment, higher competition, etc. Granted, the level of HS recruits seem to be a major upgrade to the current roster so there will likely be more impact from this crop than usual, but the point being is that, no matter what happens, the majority of the players on the roster will be legacy players from Midnight Mel and KD and they will need to contribute both on the field during gameday as well as just providing depth in practice and for inevitable injuries, etc. Even if we end up with a handful more before NLI in February, we will still need most of the legacy players to be significant contributors, etc.

HCCP has been pretty clear in the publicly released videos that he has told all the current players that they may not be here next year and that if they stay it's going to be very different to anything they have seen so far. That may be what all coaches say, but there seemed to be an emphasis on talent level to the current players . . . ergo, those current players need to be replaced by more talented players . . . meaning, you guys that have been on the team are not nearly as good as the LV that I am brining in. Again, maybe this is typical coach-speak that we just don't get to see . . . but . . .

Is this going to create resentment on the team of us v. them?

Are the new players going to act like they are the only ones that really matter and the current players are "just there" waiting to be replaced?

Which current players are going to show that they are better than what has been showcased over the last few years?

Who steps up from current and new players to unite the team as leaders?

And I'm sure much more . . . .

Don't get me wrong . . . all of this is needed. We need to turn over the roster with more talent and as soon as possible. I know I have been losing a bit of "the forest through the trees," that while all of these new commits are awesome, we still need to rely on A LOT of the players that have been part of terrible teams/seasons as a result of non-competitive talent and embarrassingly bad coaching. I am just not aware of a P5 program that has/is going through such a public and dramatic change in talent and culture in such as short period of time so this will be really interesting, and for better or worse, be highly publicized due to the spotlight that has been put on us.

Grabbing my popcorn!

It appears Pac 12 expansion is now pushed off to March or April

I am sure they have their reasons but it sure feels like a suckers game.

Do you anticipate expansion news in January? — @lilcmac5

Based on a recent conversation with one of the Hotline’s most-trusted industry sources, I would peg mid-January to mid-February as the likeliest window for a media rights deal.

And given that Kliavkoff has stated the expansion piece would come after the media rights contract and subsequent grant-of-rights agreement, it could be March or April before the Pac-12 resolves the expansion issue.
