Post-Spring Game Thoughts - Good, Bad, Ugly . . .

Nothing earth-shattering here, but after a few days to reflect, I wanted to share some thoughts and get others' thoughts. I'll also qualify that I have watched A LOT of the videos posted by Deion Jr so a lot of behind the scenes and practice vids that color my thoughts.

Overall, like many have posted, the Spring "Games" was really a giant marketing campaign for CU, and on that front, seemed incredibly successful. The fanfare, the support, the coverage . . . all awesome. Seeing all the excitement from former Buffs and having big media names like Fowler and RGIII who were having a blast made it even better . . . now . . .

THE GOOD

QB - Shedeur looks like a true P5 QB. Confident, in control, good ball placement, etc. Staub looked nice for a HS Senior as well. Still would like to see a more experienced QB added through the portal to bridge the gap between Shedeur and Staub. Wouldn't be surprised to see Drew Carter's name in the portal soon as he looks far down the depth. Overall, we have a QB for a bit . . . FINALLY.

WR - Hunter and Mathis looked strong . . . so did MLC which sucks because I love the kid, but we are fine with depth at WR. Jimmy Horn is a stud and may be the best WR on the team from what I have watched in practice vids, etc. More coming, others looked good here too. Feel like WR has been good over the years but we just have had no one to deliver the ball. Hopefully now we have the QB and system to get the ball to the WRs to make big plays.

RB - Hankerson looks to have taken the next step as we many have expected and Edwards is legit. Did Deon Smith get any play? Didn't see him and wouldn't be surprised if his name pops up in the portal . . . great kid that has gone through the ringer here, but with others being added and Venn and Offerdahl getting a lot of play in practice . . . seems like depth won't be a concern at RB.

Vibe - This is not a sleepy team . . . Prime's swag and fun has rubbed off. Just need to make sure they don't get ahead of themselves because it will be a challenging year.

THE BAD

OL - probably may be slightly better than last year, but if the QB could have been hit, he would have been hit a bit and the DL is part of the Ugly, below. This unit is just not close to a P5 unit but Lewis' quick strike/getting the ball out fast system could cover a lot of blemishes on the OL. The opened some nice holes for the RBs, but couldn't tell if it's because how bad/thin the DL is.

Shedeur/Hunter - Not bad, per se . . . and I know they are boys and worked together at JSU, but Shedeur just locks onto Hunter way too much. P5 DBs will bait and take advantage of his "Hunter-First" looks. Have plenty of talented WRs to go around . . . just hope he doesn't get locked in and telegraph as much.

DBs - WAS NOT IMPRESSED. Generally beat, not great coverage, looked small still, etc. Definitely will be needing those boys coming in the summer. Was actually surprised how they looked for a team with the best cover corner of all time at the top of the food-chart.

THE UGLY

Defense Overall - let's pray we get some big boys with talent up front. The trifecta of lack of size/talent/depth is not good. As Fowler and RGIII said a few times (on air and in social media), this is not a P5 DL. Pretty obvious. The D in general looks troublesome. Losing 2 DL last week hurts for depth. I know everyone keeps talking about landing guys in the portal, but this is the toughest position by-far to land plug-and-play talent because of the competition to land these guys. We know they will be coached hard/well by a legend in the biz, but it's hard to see the good in this unit overall. Was also not impressed by much of the coverage or the LBs and this will be over-exposed if we don't shore-up the DL to provide pressure and stops. All bad to pedestrian. This has shown up on tape on the practice vids so no surprise, but you just hope for more.

ST - MY GOODNESS. Letting Becker go for Mata and Feely looks like a huuuuuge mistake. Does the weather excuse not getting the ball to the 15 yard line on kick offs? Maybe, but at altitude would have expected better. If Feely was not his last name, he would not be playing. In practice vids he misses right a lot. Execution with 2 blocks was pathetic. We had the worst punting last year in the history of men kicking oblong balls so there is a ton of work we need. ST could easily be the reason we lose momentum or shots in close games. Coach Prime called it out right away so no sugar coating it.

MLC - love the kid. Think he has talent, heart, is playmaker and great team-citizen. Just needed a QB over the last 2 years. Having him shine in the game and then transferring sucks. I don't want to say we we'll miss him because this is probably the deepest unit, but just bummed because he will succeed and wanted it to be in the Black and Gold.

Overall Talent - We got some very obvious talent from the portal (mostly skill positions), but we also continue to have a dearth of overall talent, especially on the line. LONG way to go to be competitive.

OVERALL

I have very little question that the program is moving in the right direction. Amazingly so. So excited about the future. The Spring showcase just reminded me that we are far from putting a winning team on the field and it should not be surprising. Pretty hard to turn-over a roster quick enough to take a 1-10 team and make them good the following year. This is not basketball where adding 1 or 2 studs can change everything. After sitting back and digesting Saturday as well as all of the practice vids I watched, it just reinforced to me that this will be a process and not flipping a switch. Seeing the excitement around the program, the vibe amongst the players, the level of recruiting interest we are getting makes me very optimistic for the future. It will be very interesting to see how Coach Prime handles the struggles and losing more than he has in his life along the way . . . he says he plans on winning NOW, but I just don't see that and hope he will handle losing as he gets us right.

Official Spring Game Thread

Chilly one today, but that's not deterring the Buffs fans from showing out. Feels like fall really! Some quick notes and observations:

This is one of the biggest recruiting weekends in CU history with approximately 20 official visits and upwards of 50 official visits on campus.

This is Chris Fowler's 5th time announcing a CU game.

There are 46K expected fans for today. 29K more fans than ever before!

13 players have earned their numbers after 15 practices under Coach Prime.

Pac-12 media rights: Kliavkoff expects critical process to stretch into 2023

Asked about the timing of a media deal, Kliavkoff said: “I would not expect an announcement in the balance of this calendar year.”

He added that the 10 schools “remain committed to each other.”

The conference is negotiating with its current partners, Fox and ESPN, and with a group of newcomers to the college football media space, including Amazon.

Because rights to the Big Ten and Big 12 have been locked up into the 2030s, the Pac-12 stands as the only Power Five conference with football inventory available on the market through the remainder of the decade.

Once a media deal is reached, Kliavkoff said, he will take the proposal to the university presidents and ask them to sign a grant-of-rights agreement binding their media revenue to the conference.

“I don’t anticipate any issues,” he said.

Only then would the conference explore expansion options.

All in all, the future shape and structure of the Pac-12 could take several more months to resolve.

Ranking College Football's largest spring game attendance marks over last two weeks

Summary of an On3 article (Buffs made the list):
Numerous spring games have been added over the past two weekends, which is great news for college football.

The journey for players, coaches, and fans across the sport has officially begun, even though there is still plenty of time before the games start to count. Through the looking glass, we can see some of the most prestigious sporting events and how they're preparing for a run in 2023.

People are clamoring for football to return, as evidenced by the large crowds that have gathered around the country. Here are the teams whose fans showed up in the greatest numbers for their spring game, according to information given on Twitter by On3's Hayes Fawcett.

The largest spring game attendance record for college football is:

75,122 Ohio State Buckeyes

68,000 Penn State Nittany Lions

66,045 Nebraska Cornhuskers

58,710 Alabama Crimson Tide

58,473 Tennessee Volunteers

54,409 Oklahoma Sooners

54,000 Georgia Bulldogs

51,000 South Carolina Gamecocks

50,000 Clemson Tigers

47,277 Colorado Buffaloes

33,427 USC Trojans

33,107 Florida State Seminoles

As you can see, the attendance rankings are cluttered with many of the typical suspects. The top three slots belonged to the Big Ten, with Nebraska, Ohio State, and Penn State currently experiencing football mania.

Although the Buckeyes missed out on a trip to the championship game, they intend to return next year. According to Spencer Holbrook of Letterman Row, the overwhelming response from their supporters demonstrates the fervor of their fans.

It demonstrates the strength of Ohio State football, said Holbrook. "People will come to watch if the Buckeyes are playing on the field. Although the program is currently the subject of many questions, it has championship potential.

The Nittany Lions are anticipated to significantly improve their chances of winning the national championship in 2023, while Matt Rhule's hiring has given the Cornhuskers a boost. Moving ahead, the conference is in good hands.

"I believe it demonstrates the fervor of the Big Ten Conference. The Big Ten's turnout, according to On3's JD PicKell, "shows the buy-in these schools have been able to create around the direction of their team and it's a phenomenal recruiting tool to pitch to prospects an elite game day atmosphere." "Ohio State's ability to be at the top of this list really impresses me. It's a university that isn't a "up-and-comer" or a recent addition to the CFP discussion. That fan base could easily respond, "Thanks for the invite, but we'll be back when the games matter."

"Truly the essence of what makes CFB a unique creature. More than 70,000 people attend a practice. It's pretty electric.

Although the Big Ten won the top three spots, the SEC also claimed some of the top positions, with Alabama (No. 4), Tennessee (No. 5), Georgia (No. 7), and South Carolina (No. 8) all appearing in the Top 10.

Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks have a buzz around them, while the Crimson Tide and Volunteers are coming into 2023 with a lot of hype after missing the College Football Playoff last season. Still, the Bulldogs are still kings of college football, so it's not surprising that their supporters still support them.

The Colorado Buffaloes' inclusion on the list is arguably the most unexpected. The program is buzzing with Deion Sanders, and the support is solid. They might not compete next season, but they'll be aiming for a solid basis for success.

We are so close to college football that we can practically taste it. Fans thoroughly appreciated the spring games, which were more like an appetizer.

Vito Tisdale commits to Colorado

Kentucky S Vito Tisdale committed to Colorado. He experienced a severe knee injury during spring ball last season that put him out for the fall. Before the injury he was very active for the Wildcats' secondary playing in 19 games and recording 41 tackles, two tackles for loss and one sack.

Tisdale played in nine games, with two starts, as a sophomore in 2021. That season, he tallied 21 tackles (1.5 for loss), a sack, a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry. He led the team (and tied his personal best) with six tackles in a loss to Tennessee that fall. During his freshman season, he had 20 tackles (0.5 for loss), highlighted by a career-best six takedowns in Kentucky’s win over N.C. State in the Gator Bowl.

He was dismissed from Kentucky's program due to a violation of team rules.

4-star ATH Aaron Butler talks CU official visit

Former USC commit Aaron Butler is currently on campus with his official visit to Colorado underway. The four-star Rivals250 recruit is one of the top prospects expected to be in attendance at tomorrow's spring game, and the Buffs are currently battling it out with Oregon, Georgia and Washington (among others) for the standout two-way athlete. Butler wants to play receiver in college, and the Buffs have already been selling him on that opportunity.

Butler was already on campus for a visit earlier this offseason, and he left very impressed by that experience. CU is the first school to get him out on an official visit and it's an important trip as his recent visit to Oregon seems to have shifted his recruitment in favor of the Ducks. There will be NIL discussions, which he has indicated will be key in his decision, but he is also building a strong relationship with the Buffs coaches that could ultimately sway things in favor of CU once this weekend comes to a close.

I caught up with him in between the two visits, and linked above is my article on him discussing both trips and what CU has done to stand out in his recruitment. His dad played with Deion Sanders in Baltimore, and there is a clear connection that could come into play as well. He has a ton of respect for CU's head coach.

"As a receiver, I'm a top priority for the class of 2024. So, being a top dude on the board for them and thinking about filling that spot is a big thing for me, because my pops (Robb-Davon) played with Prime and I know what type of dude he is. He's gonna be one of the greatest coaches of all time. He's one of the greatest men of all time, not just on the football field but as a man."
