We take an inside look at recruiting with scoop and information that is exclusive to CU Sports Nation! Find out more now.

The goal of Langston Hughes (GA) linebacker Malik Horton is to make a decision as soon as he can but with many schools waiting on official visits until after the football season, his plan is to make unofficial trips and come to a decision at the latest by October 15th. He has focused his attention mainly on Colorado and Maryland, with both likely getting unofficial visits either this month or into October as well. Horton is expected to speak with Coach Clark soon regarding an official visit to Boulder but hopes to see the campus if not. He also mentioned visiting Colorado State as well during that time. Louisville still remains in the picture but he is not as high on them as Colorado and Maryland at this point after visiting.

It appears the future for South Sumter (FL) athlete Carson Wells may actually be at linebacker. According to his high school coach, he was recruited by Coach Leavitt and the plan is to put him at linebacker. Wells is expected to move from defensive end to linebacker as a senior and his prep coach has faith that the transition will be an easy one with his speed and athleticism. Since recently committing to the Buffs, no other colleges have gone through him to recruit Wells. His coach did however mention that with social media, there were colleges that extended offers earlier in the process that had not contacted him.

The football factory at Cedar Hill (TX) is likely a place that Colorado will be recruiting extremely hard in the future and that is also the case in the Class of 2017. This includes linebacker Dimitri Moore who has mentioned Colorado among his top schools. According to his twitter bio, the full list included the Buffs, Arizona State, Cal, Minnesota, Missouri, Texas Tech, and Vanderbilt. A decision is likely coming in the near future and the hope for Moore is that he will have an opportunity to get onto campus in Boulder first. Moore was attempting to see all of his top schools before finalizing the recruiting process.

With a teammate committed to Colorado, Marin Catholic (CA) offensive lineman Chantz Russell is still very much on the radar for the Buff coaches. UNLV, Wyoming, and a host of others have already offered him but a number of PAC 12 schools are watching to see how he recovers from off-season shoulder surgery. He was limited during the summer camp circuit but is hoping for a chance to showcase his skills this fall at Marin Catholic. Some of the programs after him the hardest that have not offered include Colorado, Oregon State, Arizona, San Diego State, BYU, and Utah State. His coach is confident that he can be a power five level conference player and feels that his senior film will prove that.

Tracking The Recruits Here (Schedules, Stats, Highlights)

Recap/What To Watch

Jonathan Van Diest - Cherry Creek, CO - Defensive End - Opens this week against Regis Jesuit. More on that game here.

Dante Sparaco - IMG Academy, FL - Defensive End - Played on the defensive line for a second straight week as IMG beat Grayson 26-7 on ESPNU. Had 4 tackles and a fumble recovery. This week IMG takes on Centennial, California.

Laviska Renault - Desoto, TX - Receiver - Caught two balls for 36-yards. A few highlights of him on hudl showing him turning it up field. Does not look like a burner, rather a possession receiver. Desoto one of the best in Texas beat Horn 47-13, they take on Guyer in week 2.

Alex Fontenot - George Ranch, TX - Running Back - Do not know how many stats he had, but he looked real good in his highlights against Weslaco. In their 38-0 opening season win, Fontenot’s opening highlights feature two solid runs up the middle, he also makes a good grab and turns it up field coming out of the backfield. Also as a pancake block and scores a touchdown. George Ranch takes on Dickinson in week 2.

Tyler Lytle - Servite, CA - Quarterback - Had a big opening debut throwing for 246-yards and 1 touchdown as Servite sliced up Fountain Valley 44-0. His opening senior season highlights show some good ball placement. Easy to continue to be high on this commitment. Servite plays Bishop Amat on September 2nd.

Chris Miller - Denton, TX - WR/DB - Makes a good grab in his opening highlights, making a good grab, then shaking off a defender for a touchdown. Also makes a real good play from the running back position going over 45-yards on the carry. Denton takes on Sanger in week 2.

Grant Polley - Denton, TX - OT - Outstanding first opening highlight where he drives a defensive end over 5-yards before pancaking him as Denton scores a touchdown. Plays all the way through the whistle. Just posted a few clips, but they are very impressive. Stock rising with Polley.

Will Sherman - Allen, TX - OT - Allen, Texas beat Hoover, Alabama in a high profile game 25-7 last week, Sherman looked excellent. High quality reps, etc.

Nate Landman - Monte Vista, CA - Curious about this commit and was impressed with his highlights against Deer Valley in their 49-7 victory. Caught a ball playing receiver and when the defender went to hit him, the 6-foot-3, 212 pound prospect just kept on going. Doubt he’ll play any offense, but the highlight was notable.

CUSportsNation.com Commit of the Week

Carson Wells - South Sumter, FL - South Sumter beat Leesburg 34-25 and while we featured Wells’ big hit on a punt returner, his overall highlights in the game were big time. He comes downhill so hard and makes these big tackles in the backfield. Plays amped up. Can’t wait to see what further highlights he produces.

Sept 1st: In-State High School Games to Watch

What prep games this fall should have the attention of Buff fans? We take a look at a number of games to watch and why!

9/2 - Valor Christian at Mullen

What to Watch For: Defensively, the havoc that Valor defensive tackle Noah Elliss can cause inside. He has plenty of help around him with Christian Elliss at linebacker and Will Rodgers at defensive end. Offensively, the Buffs have offers on the table for 2018 quarterback Blake Stenstrom and 2019 running back Joshia Davis.

9/2 - Cherry Creek at Regis Jesuit

What to Watch For: How dominant linebacker/Colorado commitment Jonathan Van Diest can be for the Bruins as a four-year starter. This playmaker has only continued to improve since last winter and will be a leader that is heavily leaned on by his less experience teammates.

9/9 - Regis Jesuit at Mullen

What to Watch For: The athletes all over the field at Mullen. This group boasts three players in the Class of 2017 (Isiahia Banks, Marcus McElroy, and Christian Cumber) who hold Division I offers and our top player in the Class of 2018 (Adrian Jackson). Few teams in the state can matchup with those playmakers.

9/10 - Windsor at Pine Creek

What to Watch For: The defending state champions from Windsor have seen their top senior, Corte Tapia, commit to Colorado State. But their most recruited prospect in 2018, all 6-foot-5, 250 pound of Zach Watts, has the potential to be another Division I recruit as well. These two teams will be in the mix for the Class 4A championship in 2016.

9/23 - Pomona at Valor Christian

What to Watch For: The playmakers offensively at Pomona. Although the state's #1 player in the Class of 2017, Jake Moretti, is out for the year, this group still has Max Borghi, Ryan Marquez, and others to move the chains.

9/23 - Cherry Creek at Grandview

What to Watch For: Is Hayden Blubaugh the state's top running back? He torched opponents last year for over 2,300 yards on the ground and did it in Colorado's best prep conference. He did it while nearly averaging 200 yards per game.

9/29 - Valor Christian at Cherry Creek

What to Watch For: Two powerhouse programs facing off with one another in a rematch of the state title game two seasons ago. The players have already been discussed but there are few prep football fans throughout the state not going to be interested in the outcome.

Aug 31st: 2018 California Athlete holds CU Offer

Servite athlete Julius Irvin may have just started his junior year of high school but already holds a scholarship from Colorado. We caught up with his head high school coach, Scott Meyer, and talked to him about Irvin, his strengths, and much more!

What type of player is he?

"He is a really good athlete. He started last year as a sophomore at safety. He has gotten bigger and is around 6-foot-1, 185 pounds now. He is a guy that can play corner and safety. His dad, LeRoy, played for the Rams way back. He is a really good corner but also is a kick return guy. Julius is a really good athlete who keeps getting bigger and stronger. He had a really good year in track during the spring."

What are his main strengths as a player?

“Athleticism and size. As a junior, he is a good sized safety. He is just a smart kid on and off the field. He is instinctive as a football player.”

What areas did he work on over the off-season?

“I think for him it was just getting into the weight room. He started the season last year at about 160 pounds. He is now up over 180 pounds now. He is just getting stronger and putting on some good, healthy weight in the off-season.”

How much did it help him having a dad that played in the NFL?

“I’m sure it helped him a lot whole growing up around it. He has a good understanding of what it takes to be successful with his role. He also takes care of his body and does the other stuff off the field to improve. Some kids don't really understand what it takes to the play at the next level.”

What schools have offered him so far?

“I believe right now it is Kansas and Colorado.”

What other colleges are interested?

“I think it is most of the PAC 12 schools, San Diego State, San Jose State, Fresno State, and then there are a lot of other schools interested.”

Has he made any college visits yet?

“I don't believe he has done any unofficial visits yet.”

What position do you feel he projects out at?

"I know he likes corner a little bit more. Right now, he is a guy that we have used more as a safety. I think he can play either. We will see how it plays out next year during his senior season. We will have to wait and see."

August 30th: Kaegun Williams is another Texas prospect that has attention from the coaches at Colorado

Cedar Hill running back Kaegun Williams is another Texas prospect that has attention from the coaches at Colorado. We caught up with his head coach, Joey McGuire, and talked to him about Williams, his recruiting, and more now!

What type of player has he been for you?

"He is a very versatile running back. He will play running back and slot receiver. He has incredible hands. He is 5-foot-10, 190 pounds. He is a very physical runner with great vision. He is a very intelligent kid. He has gotten an offer from Cal. He has visited Stanford and is still on their board. He has an offer from Colorado. I think that is one thing with him. He is looking for a really good place to play football."

What are his greatest strengths?

“He has great vision, great hands, and catch the ball out of the backfield. He catches the ball great.”

What areas of his game is he working on now?

“It is just to continue to get faster. He is really strong. He is a 550-pound squatter and has a 325-pound bench. He just needs to continue to get faster.”

Where does he project out at position wise?

“I think it is running back.”

What colleges are involved in his recruiting?

“I think Cal, Colorado, and Tennessee would probably be the three that he really likes. He also has some of the area schools like Tulsa and North Texas.”

What schools has he visited?

“He visited Cal and Stanford this summer. I don't think he went to Tennessee last summer but I could be wrong.”

Has he setup any official trips?

“No, he hasn’t scheduled anything. Our guys have been locked in getting ready.”

When will he decide?

"I think he is again one that wants to get it done in the next month or so. With the recruiting process speeding up and going so fast now with all the commits, I think he will get it out of the way."

How much does it help having Jaylon in his ear selling Colorado?

“Oh yeah, it helps. Jaylon is a very popular person around here so it definitely helps. Jaylon has been up there two or three times and is able to tell these guys what it is like and what they are doing. I think Jaylon could be big in getting these guys to Colorado.”
