Colorado targets on campus this weekend

JuCo CB Kevin George
UTSA DE commit Morris Joseph

- Oregon continued their poaching of Colorado recruits by offering Carson Wells. His visit is coming at a perfect time as DJ Eliot will be on campus this weekend to meet with Wells and the other visitors. Wells was being recruited by Leavitt and CU will hope to lock up Wells' recruitment after this weekend. Wells is listed on his rivals profile as a defensive end, but we hear that Colorado has him slotted as a outside linebacker commit. He could play with his hand in the dirt at defensive end or play as a 3-4 outside linebacker.

- Joseph and George are both a couple of Plan B options. Joseph is a three-star prospect from Texas that is currently committed to UTSA. He is the backup plan, the way I see it, to DE Nick Ford, who Colorado offered the other night. We'll have a full story on Ford's recruitment this afternoon, but the Buffs have a lot of ground to make up if they want Ford as he might not take an official visit to CU. If Colorado doesn't get Ford, then I'm not saying they'll definitely offer Joseph. It's just something to keep an eye on.

- George is an intriguing recruit. He was a full qualifier out of high school, so he does need to stay at his junior college for his second year. He played in 2016 at Georgia Military College, but he could sign on February 1 and could enroll in the next term. He has excellent size at 6-foot-3, 185-pounds. Guess who else he's receiving interest from? Charles Clark from Oregon.... George's only offer right now is from Delta State, so if he doesn't land one of these big offers, then he'll likely stay at his JuCo in 2017.

- Nebraska DT commit Deiontae Watts was slated to officially visit earlier this week, but we were told that he will not be coming to Boulder, and the Buffs have stopped recrutiing him. I don't know the specific details of why CU moved on.

- Alabama OLB commit Chris Allen was considering a Colorado official visit in January, but we're told that his recruitment from CU basically "fizzled off."

- Here's probably the biggest nugget of information in The Rise Report today.. We're hearing good things about where Colorado stands with Xavier Newman. The staff has absolutely not given up here, and there is a lot going on behind the scenes. If I had to make a pic right now, I would say that he ends up in Boulder.

- Our Colorado source raved about how special this 2017 class is for Colorado. This source was very confident last week about the Buffs' class when we spoke, and with the news of Polley and Nixon sticking with their Colorado commits, it's clear that the source was spot on.

- With Dino Gordon leaving the program, I was curious if the Colorado staff would go after a second RB in the 2017 class. I was told that it's not a position of priority because of the great depth CU has. There is a possibility that down the road CU looks at a transfer, but it's nothing something they need at the moment. In the 2018 class, a source says Colorado is looking at taking two 2018 running backs. Colorado has a lot of different options with what they want to do at the RB spot because of the depth they have.

- I got word that the Colorado staff has cooled off of recruiting cornerback Samuel Barnes. He does not seem to be a priority target right now.
