On Sunday July 24th Colorado landed their 15th commitment from Miami, Florida. Shamar Hamilton a 6-foot-5, 235 pound defensive end pledged to the Buffs. CUSportsNation.com's Christian James provides 10 quick takeaways from the JC commit.
1.) Colorado was the only offer but.....
The Buffs made it clear earlier than others who they liked in the junior college ranks and are not afraid to offer. That was the case with Moorpark defensive back Jalin Burrell who committed in the summer. Hamilton's lone offer was from Colorado but he had a wide net of others watching to see his progress this fall.
2.) In football years, Hamilton is a baby
The majority of football players who head to the Division I level have probably logged around ten years before going to college. Hamilton played one season at Santaluces High School and his lack of experience may have cost him a chance at this level after high school but did not hamper his ability to get an opportunity in a power five conference.
3.) Bolstering a critical position
Colorado needs bigmen in a major way and Hamilton will only add to the depth the defensive line. He recorded 2.5 sacks and 32 total tackles during his first year at ASA College but could double those numbers with an additional off-season of workouts and more opportunities.
4.) Will sign in December
The fact that Hamilton could be on campus in Boulder for the second semester and will have an opportunity to do spring workouts is something that gives him an advantage on the majority of other expected signees in the Class of 2017.
5.) Time is on his side
According to the NCAA clock, Hamilton has three years to play two seasons. If he isn't ready or suffers an injury, he will have an opportunity to play two years in 2017, 2018, or 2019.
6.) National Recruiting
After plucking Burrell out of California, Colorado showed once again the location of an athlete doesn't matter. They went down to Florida to pull out a standout defensive end who would have seen his offer list grow if he played out his sophomore year of football.
7.) Official visits
Hamilton announced recently that he had planned to take his official visit to Boulder. Expect that to be an even bigger recruiting weekend on October 1st. The Buffs will be hosting Oregon State and they will be pulling out all the stops to snag as many commits as they can get. Expect Hamilton to help their case.
8.) The offer
He received the offer from Colorado on June 28th, according to this tweet from his program. It took him less than a month to decide that Colorado was the place for him.
9.) He has a chip on his shoulder
Despite being 6-foot-5, 235 pounds in high school, he plays with something to prove. Heading to the junior college allowed him to do that. He is just over a year removed from his high school graduation and knows that bigger and better things are ahead for him in Boulder.
10.) The Rise is Real
Today could be a day to remember for Colorado recruiting and he got started early with the commitment. It could be one of many before all is said and done.
