This may only be of interest to me, perhaps because our west slope place is just 35 miles from the Utah border, and we spend a lot of time in that beautiful state, but the success of Utah’s D1 football programs is impressive. Two conference championships, three bowl games, three winning seasons with at least 10 wins. In a state with much less population than Colorado.

As we know, their flagship university, Utah, wins the Pac 12 conference championship and are prepping for the Rose Bowl. CU fans know all about the Utes.

Utah State‘s Aggies win the Mountain West championship with a very impressive win over the SDSU’s #19 Aztecs, going 11-3 overall, with a win over the Pac 12’s Beavers in their bowl game. (While having to use the services of a sophomore QB in his first D1 game ever after an injury to their starting QB.)

BYU goes 10-3 with wins over the Utes, ASU, USC and the Virginia Cavaliers among others. (Yes, they lost their bowl game to UAB, but those things happen in bowls, even after an impressive season. 10-3 is not bad. CU could only dream of a 10-3 season with wins over the Utes, ASU and SC.)

Perhaps it’s the work ethic, maybe the training tables are better, maybe there are better practices with more discipline, maybe the commitment to football matters more, heck maybe it’s something in the water :) . It’s likely that administrators hire the right people. But Utah should be, and very likely is, very proud of major college football in that state.

Colorado has the Mines’ Orediggers and Air Force’s winning record as its visible successful football programs. Everything else is a mess. Colorado’s two major universities could perhaps look around and get some tips and pointers on how to run a D1 football program.
