. . . any journalism/media majors out there wanna know how NOT to draft a press release? Read the one that Oregon AD Rob Mullens threw out after firing Helfrich. It's out there on Twitter.

It should be a simple exercise: Thank the guy for his service and tell the masses that you need to go in a new direction. What does Mullens do? Runs Helf's record and recruiting history through the Mr. Peabody Wayback Machine and drafts a manifesto that blames him for everything except the Kennedy assassination. Just brutal.

How hard can being the Oregon athletic director be? You kiss Phil Knight's ass at every cocktail party and do whatever you can to ensure the Nike money keeps flowing. Crap, I'm guessing Helfrich is gone because Knight wanted him gone. All Mullens needed to do was do what Knight tells him to do and draft a simple one paragraph press release.

And he effed that up. Helfrich is a good guy. Just didn't win enough. Yeah, all coaches are hired to be fired. Nobody lasts 30 years and retires with a gold watch from State U. That's the business they chose.

All you can expect is that you get treated like a human being on the way out. And Oregon couldn't even pull that off.

Screw Oregon. I hope they stay down for a long time.
