BOULDER— Having big boys up front on the defensive line is key to winning PAC 12 football games and this year the Buffs are bringing back a 325 pounder who is no stranger to the defensive line.
Josh Tupou is back this season and the other guys on the defensive line couldn't be happier.
“Having Josh back is a big help in the middle, he’s a leader and everybody respects him, so if he’s going full speed were all going full speed. He’s just a force in the middle,”
In order for the Buffs to be successful this year they are going to need to make their way to the quarterback often and this defensive line has the capability to get there multiple times during games.
“As a whole we just need to all be pushing each other everyday and lean on each other, just know our responsibilities and execute full speed,” Jordan Carrell on what they need to do in order to make that happen.
The defensive line also has some young guys to back up guys like Carrell, Tupou and Leo Jackson. Timothy Coleman, Jase Franke, Eddy Lopez and Lyle Tuiloma are going to be those guys, even though most of them are young the team will look to them this season to make an impact up front.
“They’ve all been good, they are young and they are still learning, but they've made some good strides and we got a good group of guys.”
The defensive line started to make strides towards the end of last season and this year they are looking to continue where they left off.
“This camp were just perfecting our craft, we understand the defense now, so it’s just about getting our steps right and playing with proper technique.”
And Coach Jim Jeffcoat is helping his guys get to that point, in a non-traditional way.
“That big old dude brings his humor, he’s never really in a down mood, he’s always up and we feed off his energy.”
Look for the defensive line this year to make progress both on getting to the quarterback and stopping the run more efficiently.
