Day 16 Practice Report

After taking Sunday off, which the Buffs have done all August, the CU football team was back on the practice fields on Monday for practice No. 16 of fall camp.

"Today we were in full pads and had a good, physical practice, which was good," Colorado head coach Mike MacIntyre said. "[On Sunday], we were able to review all of the scrimmage tape from Friday and practice on Saturday. I thought today was very productive."

While the Buffs have another week and a half to go until their first game of the season, their opponent, the CSU Rams, play its first game this Saturday against Hawaii.

This point of fall camp can bring on some fatigue and can be tough, but the Buffs continue to press on.

"Right now, you're going against each other, but you're also starting to look at CSU," MacIntyre said. "You get a little mix of it."

As it is in every college football game, the battle in the trenches will be key for the Rocky Mountain Showdown, and the Buffs' offensive and defensive lines are improved from last season.

"I think they've heard through the grapevine or through the media that they weren't physical enough, weren't good enough," MacIntyre said. "I've seen a chip on their shoulder. They're coming to compete every day."

Quick Hitters

- MacIntyre said that the team has to walk the fine line of keeping physicality up to prepare for the season, while also trying to avoid potential injury. (Knock on wood) the Buffs have done a good job of that so far during fall camp.

- MacIntyre talked about some young guys that have impressed expectations during camp.

"Izzy [Israel Antwine], the freshman, I thought he was going to be good, but he's going to play a lot this year as a freshman, which is rare for a defensive lineman that early," said MacIntyre. "The other guy who keeps doing really, really well is Mustafa [Johnson]. He's even stronger and better.

"Offensively, I've really liked what Brett Tonz has done. I like what Colby Pursell has done."

-- Offensive lineman Tim Lynott Jr., who suffered an achilles injury last fall and missed spring practices, received praise from MacIntyre.

"Timmy Lynott is looking good," said MacIntyre. "There's nothing with the achilles, which is amazing. The trainers did an phenomonal job with him, and he worked his rear end off getting back."

-- If you're on Twitter and follow wide receivers coach Darrin Chiaverini, you've probably seen him tweet "Nothing to say, a lot to prove." MacIntyre likes what he's seen from the group as they've adopted that mantra.

"I hope they all need to be saying that all of the time," MacIntyre said with a smile. "They're doing a good job and competing out there."

-- A few injury updates: True freshman offensive lineman Frank Fillip was back from injury on Saturday, which was lighter practice, and was full-go on Monday. MacIntyre said that Fillip looked good. Senior safety Evan Worthington is expected to be back on Tuesday, and there are no long term concerns with him. Wide receiver Juwann Winfree was back from injury on Monday. He didn't participate in every aspect of practice, but did go full-speed during some parts today. MacIntyre says that Winfree will be fully healthy by the end of the week.
