After a tough year where CU went 4-9 in 2015, a year after going 2-10 and not winning a single Pac 12 game, CU heads into the 2016 off season full of promise that the team can turn the corner if things fall in place.

Chidobe Awuzie - Gets a phone call from someone offering him a spot on another team and some solid NIL $$$. A day later, he's off into the portal.
Tedric Thompson - Gets a similar phone call and is in the portal the next day as well.
Samson K and Tupou - Get slightly different but similar calls for being on teams with more Polynesian players and NIL $$$ to help their families.
Shay Field and Juwann Winfree - End up in the portal out of nowhere.
Jimmy Gilbert - Also, ends up in the portal in hopes of playing closer to home after 3 semi disappointing seasons with CU.
Devin Ross - enters the portal as well as he wants to play in Cali and hears UCLA has some openings.
Leo Jackson and a half dozen other players jump into the portal just to see if they can start somewhere, all were 2nd teamers in 2015.

All of this happens before January, so we're down about 15-16 scholarship players before winter training even starts.

To make matters worse, Jim Leavitt and Charles Clarke both leave for new schools in January. 1 other assistant leaves as well leaving Mac2 to hire 3 new coaches before signing day in early February.

Of course, during the spring Davis Webb decides to go to Cal instead of CU. He sees that Sefo is doing a lot better, sees CU's OL also, and decides no way on CU. After spring, others hear about Sefo's improved status as well. Late in the spring, after getting a good Doctor result, Sefo also gets a phone call from someone claiming team X is in need of a QB after an injury to a player.

Suddenly, in late May, Sefo is in the transfer portal as well. A couple of offensive linemen end up leaving, another defensive lineman, and a few more players after spring ball is up and they want a change of scenery for various reasons.

CU goes into the 2016 season which had some potential promise if things come together and ends up with a team that can't compete with anybody.

The magical 2016 season that could have been, is a disaster of a season that CU finishes 1-11 (0 Pac 12 wins). Mac2 is fired after the season and we're starting over in 2017.

1 time transfer, NIL, buying coaches, all doom CU's 2016 team before it starts. No Pac 12 South title. No glory. Thank goodness college football of today wasn't around in 2016. We got 1 season to enjoy a balloon year and bring pride back into the program, at least momentarily, before things just got way out of control.
