Danny Langsdorf had an update for both Drew Carter, who's been eating up the No. 2 reps in practice behind Brendon Lewis as well as JT Shrout, who is in the early stages of recovering from knee surgery:
Regarding Carter: "He's gotten a lot of reps. As the (No.) 3, you're not going to get a lot of works early, and he's gotten all those (No.) 2 reps as of late, so I think he's really come a long ways. He's a talented thrower, he'a an athletic kid — was a really good basketball player in high school and has dabbled a little bit here at CU with some basketball. So, he can do those things, is a fluid athlete, can move well and has got a live arm, so I've been impressed with him throwing the ball. He's got to learn our system in a hurry. He's just a freshman, so he doesn't have a lot of experience with us, and as the (No.) 2, he's one play away from playing. I've been pleased with his throwing ability and we've been harping on studying and putting that extra time in."
On Shrout: "He's good. He's got a really good attitude. We talked briefly yesterday and he's coming along. Obviously, he's really disappointed. I think he had an excellent spring and summer with a lot of hard work and was having a really good fall camp (before suffering) a really unfortunate injury. I think it took him a little bit to get over that, get his mind right and get back and going, but I think he's in a better place today than a couple weeks ago. He's terribly disappointed but he's going to bounce back great and this will be a really good learning year for him...Hopefully by next spring, he'll be up and running at full speed."
.....
Langsdorf didn't exactly spell it out, but my read on Carter, based off hearing he has not mastered the playbook is a big ol' yikes. If Brendon Lewis goes down...I don't even want to think about that. Ultimately, it's not a knock on Carter — he's in a tough spot and is eight months into CU's system but wow, I don't mean to be captain obvious here but the prospects of what would happen should Lewis become unavailable or injured are bleak.
Not exactly any breaking news regarding Shrout but I certainly wish that kid the best. Just brutal what happened to him. Hope to see him this upcoming spring ready to compete.
