Staff roundtable: Perspective and predications for Colorado-Cal

Apologies for the delay on this. Had a few different things going on at once today.

But here, we answer the key questions facing CU heading into tomorrow's matchup with Cal. Will this team win a game the rest of the season? Who's CU's most logical coaching candidate? Who will win Saturday?

RBs coach Darian Hagan intends to spread opportunities around to CU's backs

Colorado endured a tough loss against Arizona, but the Buffs' backfield provided positive moments that helped maintain a competitive edge. As the season continues, RBs coach Darian Hagan is giving all of his backs a chance to claim the game.

"This is business": Some Colorado players adjusting to their fifth different head coach

For 11 players on the Colorado roster, Mike Sanford is their fifth different head coach, including interims, in their time with the Buffs.

I spoke with a couple of those players yesterday about that experience and what they've learned from it

What type of coach is CU looking for?

Offensive, defensive? Jon Wilner had an interesting take after considering the local Colorado prep talent which leans large, offensive linemen:
"But CU should consider reverse engineering its search strategy, first determining what style of play is most likely to succeed given the talent pipeline, then finding a coach who can maximize that pool of players. If the local talent leans big, perhaps the Buffaloes should consider hiring a coach with that background: Someone who was an offensive lineman, has coached and developed offensive linemen or, at the very least, favors a run-heavy scheme."

Some of the coaching hires that in his opinion could work:
Former Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst: He’s not the dynamic personality or relentless recruiter the Buffaloes need, but his success in Madison (four 10-win seasons) cannot be ignored. And Chryst’s reputation as a playcaller and developer of linemen and tailbacks would work well. We are generally wary of recycled coaches, but it’s not like Chryst has been in the TV booth for years.

Indianapolis Colts tight ends coach Klayton Adams: Don’t let the title fool you: Adams is a lineman by trade, having played center at Boise State and coached the position at Colorado when the Buffaloes won the 2016 division title. He knows what works in Boulder, and the NFL experience would play well with recruits aiming to play on Sundays.

Baylor offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes: An offensive tackle at UTEP who coached the position at Arizona State, Auburn and LSU. He was BYU’s play-caller in 2020, when quarterback Zach Wilson had his breakout season. Grimes also served as Dan Hawkins’ run-game coordinator in Boulder for two years.

Lawson Lovering is back from injury -- and maybe better than ever

Chatted a couple of weeks ago with CU big man Lawson Lovering about his recovery from an MCL injury and his expectations for this season. He was the No. 60 recruit nationally in the 2021 class and given his height, he probably stands as one of the more intriguing players on this roster

Jaylyn Sherrod back for another season with the Buffs

With her shifty offensive abilities, point guard Jaylyn Sherrod was an explosive and key player on last year's squad. After graduating early, she decided to come back for her senior season to help lead the Buffs to another potential NCAA tournament.

Not sure this has ever happened, Sat night ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC

All have games in the prime time slot:
ABC - Clemson at Boston College - 5:30 PM MT
NBC - BYU vs Notre Dame (Las Vegas) - 5:30 PM MT
Fox - Washington State at USC - 5:30 PM MT
CBS - Texas A&M at Alabama - 6:00 PM MT

Notre Dame only plays one or two game at night (normally 12:30 PM)
CBS only has I think it is 2 Saturdays were they can a SEC night game.

i would like to see

Lewis has not worked out at QB but I would like to see him on the field in some capacity. He is being wasted riding the bench. He has decent size and speed and could give us added depth at RB especially. I can envision some interesting play opportunities to keep the "D" honest with him back there.
What do you think?
