Big 12 deal puts focus on where Pac-12 will land

Now that the Big 12 has secured six-year deals with ESPN and Fox Sports worth $2.28 billion, all eyes are on the Pac-12, which got out of its exclusive negotiating window with ESPN and Fox three weeks ago. This is what we know.

ESPN and Amazon Prime remain the front runners to pick up Pac-12 rights, with agreements potentially coming by the end of the year. It’s too early to describe what’s in those packages with any accuracy. But it’s important to note that ESPN’s Big 12 deal does not take it out of the running for Pac-12 rights. And Amazon still wants a package of college football games that can complement its Thursday night package of NFL games.
Pac-12 officials’ initial reaction when they heard of the Big 12’s deal was relief. Big 12 schools each will receive around $31 million per school as part of the deal, and Pac-12 officials are optimistic that they will be able to eclipse that figure. This means that unless the Big Ten or SEC come calling, it’s unlikely a Pac-12 school will be persuaded to leave the conference.

One reason for that optimism is the fact that the Pac-12 has its rights in the open market. The Big 12 could not have hit the open market until 2024. While Amazon and ESPN are the clear front-runners, the Pac-12 has had talks with Apple, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery. The theory is that the presence of multiple serious bidders will help drive the price up.

The big question will come down to price. Media companies believe the Big 12 deal set the market. The Pac-12 still is aiming higher. Keep in mind, the Pac-12 will have fewer schools -- 10 instead of 12 -- after USC and UCLA depart for the Big Ten. That’s two fewer mouths to feed. ESPN took pains to make sure that its Big 12 deal would not result in a bigger per-school payout than the ACC. Because of the ACC Network, it’s difficult to determine how much ACC schools make from its ESPN deal. But I was told that the Big 12 will not eclipse the ACC on that front at any point in its deal, which runs through 2030-31. ESPN is likely to approach Pac-12 negotiations in a similar way.
I keep seeing one aspect of the Big 12 deal that is creating confusion among fans on social media. Historically, the Big 12 had what it called "Tier Three" rights, which are the rights schools retained and sold to local broadcasters. These are the rights, for example, that Texas used to create the Longhorn Network with ESPN. ESPN now controls all of those rights as part of its deal; there are no more institutional-controlled games and no more Tier Three rights.

It’s pretty quiet on that front, but is there rules on contacting current coaches? Are guys like Walters free reign? Will we not see anything til December? Are the powers to be hoping Sanford can win a couple?

I know Rick George is a sly Fox with his previous work as he kept us all guessing while he was playing checkers and negotiating with Dorrell, but the circumstances were a bit different.

I am just curious when things will heat up, I know these things should take time, just not sure on all the rules

With bowl eligibility in the rearview mirror, interim head coach Mike Sanford helps build for the future through NIL extensions while focusing on the progress of the current roster and their next four difficult games ahead.

In his first public comments about UCLA’s planned entry into the Big Ten, Bruins basketball legend Bill Walton blasted the decision and said he hopes the move is rescinded.

Walton, silent on the matter for four months, issued a statement Tuesday that was obtained by the Hotline.

In it, he directed criticism at UCLA’s “highest-level directors of athletics” for making a decision that’s “about money,” doesn’t serve the athletes and runs counter to the school’s mission.

“I don’t believe that joining the Big 10 is in the best interest of UCLA, its students, its athletes, its alumni, its fans, the rest of the UC system, the State of California, or the world at large,” wrote Walton, one of the most iconic athletes in Pac-12 history and an NBA Hall of Famer.


UCLA and USC announced their departures for the Big Ten on June 30, with a start date of Aug. 2, 2024, following approximately 100 years in the Pac-12 (and its prior versions).

The move created an existential crisis for the Pac-12, with the 10 remaining schools considering options while they seek a media rights agreement that would bind them together for the remainder of the decade.

UCLA’S WRONG TURN​

All progress requires change … not all change is progress,

I’m Bill Walton,


I’m a California native, resident, engaged citizen, voter, and taxpayer,

I’m a product of California’s terrific public school systems,

I’m a proud UCLA alum,

I am not in favor of UCLA’s recent announced decision to leave the Pac-12 Conference of Champions, nor their desire to join the Big 10,

I don’t like this attempted move,

I don’t support it,

I hope it does not happen,

UCLA is a public school that is supposed to serve the interests of the State of California,

UCLA is one of the world’s greatest schools, and brands,

UCLA represents the best of what life has been, and can, could and should be,

UCLA has been as great and as important a part of my life as anything, ever,

I don’t believe that joining the Big 10 is in the best interest of UCLA, its students, its athletes, its alumni, its fans, the rest of the UC system, the State of California, or the world at large,

Some of the many reasons why I am opposed to UCLA’s attempted move to the Big 10 are, in no particular order:

* the negative impact on the health, both physical and mental, of UCLA’s student-athletes,

* the exponential increase in travel on UCLA’s student-athletes will hurt them physically, mentally, and in their overall lives,

* the negative impact of the excessive travel will extend to families, friends, fans, alumni and everyone else,

* the increased costs of joining the Big 10 will negate the projected increased revenue assumptions of this proposed move,

* this proposed move to the Big 10 is contrary to UCLA’s and the entire UC System’s stated and professed environmental sustainability goals,

this proposed move to the Big 10 has serious negative implications and ramifications for the University of California, Berkeley

and flies in the face of the supposed team concept that has always been a part of the California Dream, plan and business model,

* this proposed move to the Big 10, is all about football, and money,

* what about all the other 24 sports and 600+student-athletes at UCLA, who are responsible for 99+% of UCLA’s National Championships,

* how many of these “others” are represented and willing participants in this proposed deal,

I went to UCLA— gladly, willingly, and proudly,

it was my dream,

that dream never included the Big 10,


I have spoken to no one, other than the highest-level directors of athletics at UCLA, who think that this proposed move to the Big 10 is a good idea,

every argument made by these senior AD’s and why they like it, is about money,

these same proponents of moving to the Big 10, are the first people I have ever encountered in my life,

who have claimed economic hardship and limitations in Los Angeles,

and that the solution lies in the Midwest,

I have made my feelings known, privately, to the powers that be in the State of California, including the UC’s Board of Regents,

my hope and dream is that this proposed move by UCLA, my alma mater, will be rescinded,

Colorado has lost a commitment this morning with Texas-based receiver Wesley Watson officially backing away from his pledge to the Buffs after being committed since June. The A&M Consolidated recruit has been seeing increased attention since the coaching move at CU, and that has led to new offers from Oklahoma State and Houston within the last couple weeks. He took an official visit to Kansas State over the weekend after picking up an offer from the Wildcats shortly after Karl Dorrell was fired. KSU looks to be his likely landing spot after the visit.

This is all part of the process during a coaching change, and he likely will not be the last recruit to back away from his commitment in this class for the Buffs.

Just got fired from Auburn. Seems like the most logical fit imo.

Interim HC Mike Sanford discusses developments in the NIL realm, looking at Oregon and retaining commits and current players for the future.

Colorado's offense played their best game of the season last night putting up 359 yards and four scores, but Arizona State won last night's offensive battle finishing the night with 559 yards. A night of missed tackles and missed opportunities.

“Honestly, that’s what we’re supposed to be,” Montana Lemonious-Craig said. “We’re supposed to be doing that. We need to have better production, and at the end of the day it wasn’t enough.”

I listened to the podcast and was not sure what to make of it. The Amazon exec, Marie Donoghue, is definitely a very competent person and sells Amazon Sports big time! I didn't realize that Amazon made a bid for the entire B1G broadcast rights and from what I've heard offered more money than the winning bidder, Fox.

Still, the interview rubbed me the wrong way in that she talked about everything except college football. At times she sounded like a commercial real estate salesperson with "premier sports properties" over and over again. When asked specifically about the Pac 12 she gave it about 30 seconds in her 50 minute interview.

I came away thinking that Amazon has already punted and Apple TV is going to be the Pac 12's partner in the media rights.

Happy Halloween, everyone. The men's basketball exhibition threw things off a bit yesterday, so I wasn't able to start writing until last night, but I've got my five takeaways from CU's loss to Arizona State

There were definitely some encouraging aspects of the game, but man, looking at the rest of the schedule, it was hard not to be more than a little fatalistic

No one was really Close.

But @Longtimebuff1 wins it with 12 points off the score- he had CU-42 ASU 38 and is this weeks winner.
