Updates from interim HC Mike Sanford

  • Deion Smith was able to walk out of the facility on his own accord. He has functionality of all limbs. Smith will not be practicing Tuesday and the staff will "play it by ear" his availability for this week, but Smith is expected to play on Saturday against Oregon State.
    • "Jayle and Charlie being fully capable to go and share load, if there is a reason that Deion isn't able to play, if Fontenot isn't back as well."
    • "Alex [Fontenot] will be interesting to see where he's at from Tuesday, Wednesday."
  • Owen McCown is still the starter moving forward. Sanford made the assessment to take him out after the hard sack at the beginning of the third.
    • "I wanted our football team to be able to finish the game well and J.T. did an incredibly good job and he will continue to grow, both will continue to grow and those guys give us a really good combination."
  • The defense learned an, "entirely new structure over the course of 10 days," Sanford said. The scheme was overall sound, but Sanford wants to further develop the communication between the defensive staff when it comes to adjustments.
  • Sanford added a Sunday night practice. Players with less than 10 snaps in the game played in a "Ralphie Bowl" and scrimmaged this evening.
    • They had a family picnic at the IPF. "I just wanted to continue to create that atmosphere of family for our football team as we go down the stretch."
  • It was big to have Brady Russell back in the offensive fold.
  • Sanford on rotating his tackles yesterday:
    • Three guys that really stood out in terms of their performance offensively on the O line was was [RT] Jake Wiley, [LG] Casey Roddick and I thought Casey played his best game season by longshot. And then I thought [RG] Tommy Brown played really well also.
  • On special teams, Toren Pittman and Anthony Lyle were, "millimeters," away from blocking a punt. Sanford wanted to see speed out of the unit and, "I think that was the best we've worked all year."
    • "I think they really benefited from the energy on the sideline," he said. "We had the towel mafia waving towels on kickoffs and kickoff returns, that was fun to see."

AD-Rick George, More Stuff

I had a conversation today with a CU fan who said he had spoken with Rick George recently about CU’s recruit transfer policy. According to this fan RG was annoyed when asked about CU’s transfer policy and said that CU would be making a great hire. You could say a lot of negative things about RG, but one that he is not? RG is not a fool! He has been AD at CU for long enough to either feel there is nothing that needs to be changed about the transfer policy or he has been told by higher ups that no changes will be made. I have to assume that RG has had conversations with other AD’s and with coaches at CU to know that the buffs are not able to recruit on an equal level as many other schools. My guess is that RG wants to keep his million dollar salary job, so he keeps his mouth shut. As I said, the man is not a fool.

0-5 What a Shame

BAsed on how this team played today, was anybody coaching prior to two weeks ago? BTW, what was Sanford doing in weeks 1-5? These were the same players but not the same play at all. SAnfords gonna have to win a few more games, get a few strong recruits to commit and explain few things before i'd give him the keys to the sports car. I am really PO'd and skeptical about any of these coaches sticking around after running our program off the road and onto a trash heap.

How many programs in this country fill their stadium for an 0-5 team that has been so hard to watch for soooo long? This is a top 25 program in waiting for a coach that has a brain, a heartbeat and who doesnt think a $15 million guaranteed contract allows a guy to sleep on the job. Sanford has not earned the right to lead this team after participating in our 0-5 debacle - he's lucky ADRG did not kick his butt out the door w Dorrel and Wilson. I'm all for a firey coach but where was the fire the first 5 weeks of the season.
What a shame

QBs and College Football

Yesterday was quite the day. So glad the Buffs won in an exciting game.

The QB talent on display for the rest of the afternoon into the evening was breathtaking. Tennessee’s Hooker and ‘Bama’s Young put on a display for the ages. And the Pac 12, although not a powerful conference, can boast some real talent at QB. The Utah game against USC, with Williams and Cam Rising battling it out, was also epic. Cam Rising is a deceptive incredible athlete and tough as nails. Along with DTR at UCLA, the Pac has QBs that play at a whole different level than CU. It’s just a fact of life. (Daniels at UWV and Slovis at Pitt are also Pac products.) It’s really quite remarkable, IMO.

Throw in QBs like the boy-next-door, Michigan’s McCarthy, and of course Stroud at OSU, among a pretty darn good list of others around the country, and fans have some real talent to view on Saturdays.

Terrific football Saturday yesterday. The NFL has nothing like it, IMHO.

Defense . . .

I mean . . . I don't think Cal was all that good, but damn, night and day. Wilson should never be allowed to coach a DL or defense again.

Only issue I had with Defensive playcalling all day was on the last drive we played not to give up anything big and pressure was working all day. Other than that, pretty darn impressive showing.

Also, I'm pretty pissed if I'm Thomas, Chandler-Semedo, Lang because they showed what they could do today.

Let's see if we can keep that energy and pressure going forward.
