8-Days Away: Biggest Defensive Impact Players for Colorado State Game

The Rocky Mountain Showdown is now 9-days away. Next Friday on September 2 at 6PM, on ESPN the Colorado State Rams (0-0) will take on the Colorado Buffaloes (0-0) in the Battle for the Centennial Trophy. Over the next few days we'll be breaking down the match up providing you with in-depth coverage. Today we take a look at who we feel are the biggest defensive impact players for the Buffs going into the RMS.

1. Chidobe Awuzie - Defensive Back
The heart and the sole of the defense is clearly Awuzie and a big play or a big hit from him early on in the game would be polarizing for not only the Buffs’ defense, but for the thousands of Buffs fans in attendance. Last year against Colorado State Awuzie played in 88 plays, recorded 6 tackles, and 2 pass deflections. It’s cliche, but big time players rise up in big time games…

2. Josh Topou - Defensive Tackle
Last year against Colorado, Colorado State Quarterback Nick Stevens was 25-39 passing for 282-yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Neither Colorado or Colorado State came up with a quarterback sack in the game, clearly getting heat on Stevens is key and while Topou while likely draw double teams, he needs to have a full 4 quarters of drawing double teams to allow the Buffs’ defensive line unit or the backers to get to Stevens.

3. Samson Kafovalu - Defensive End
Kafovalu is another dominating linemen that needs to have big game and here is why. With Buff Defensive Tackle Josh Topou drawing double teams and the offensive coordinator for Colorado State Will Friend trying to figure out ways to get in or around Topou, this will create plenty of opportunities for Kafovalu to either get to the quarterback or focus on stopping the run. There is no reason that Kafovalu should not be amped up to get back on the field and make an instant impact.
