I will no doubt update this in regards to the unofficial guys coming into town, but where things sit right now, this weekend is slated to be the biggest recruiting weekend of the season to date for Colorado. Below is a list of guys who are going to be in town.
Current 2020 commits:
Joe Perkins
Stacy Sneed
Brenden Rice
Keith Miller
Official Visits:
1. Jason Harris: four-star DE from Gilbert, Ariz. who is being recruited as an OLB by CU's Brian Michalowski. He's 6-foot-7 and 220 pounds. His offer list if put on paper would read like a medieval scroll that touches the floor. In total, he's approaching 30 offers with 9 Pac-12 schools including CU in the mix.
A source of mine who covers recruiting in Arizona initially thought of him landing at CU doubtful — Harris has an older brother playing for U of A and this source believes Jason is "leaning there big time." He as of now has two FutureCast submissions by Rivals publishers, both predicting him going to the Wildcats, however, those picks were submitted back in July.
Mel Tucker said today that big-name recruits are attracted to one another. I wonder if the Antonio Alfano news may serve as something of a boost for Colorado in his eyes....and on that same note, thew aforementioned source referred to Alfano in just that way — a big, big splash that forces a guy like Harris to sit down and think about Colorado.
"Colorado has made some serious noise" with Harris recently, I am told. Additionally, I am hearing that a Mr. Brenden Rice has been a "positive influence in Jason's ear" of late, too.
So a bit of a balancing act. High-profile recruit in Alfano choosing CU plus another high-profile local recruit in Rice should be considered two major positives in regards to Colorado's attempts to land him, while on the negative side, his family connection at UA with an older brother on the team.
Final take: Colorado's got a damn good shot at him. Beautiful, sunny and mid-60s is the forecast for Saturday. A beautiful day in Boulder on his OV plus being around the plethora of other recruits, including Rice, just might do the trick. I like CU's chances.
2. Ashaad Clayton: four-star RB from New Orleans. Clayton is 6-foot-0 and 190 pounds. Lots of SEC interest and as I mentioned in the past, Clayton right now has narrowed his finalist choices down mainly to Kansas and CU.
A source of mine tells me that "his camp" as the source put it, has been pushing hard for him to go to Kansas, but this one by no means is a lost cause for the Buffs.
Clayton very quickly scheduled an OV after picking up a late offer from the Buffs and local recruiting aficionado Cordae Hankton, so consider the Buffs very much in on this one, as well.
Furthermore, given Clayton could be hot on Kansas, any current CU commits ring a bell who could be of potential use in perhaps swaying him away from the Jayhawks and into the Buffs' camp? Keith Miller told me recently that he's been talking with Ashaad a lot and likes what he's been hearing. Keith deserves a lot of credit for bringing Rice into the fold and given he's a former Kansas pledge, not insinuating that he'd trash the program or anything, but I do think his voice in herding Clayton away from that decision is and will continue to be valuable.
3. Toren Pittman: 6-foot-4, 190-pound OLB from Frisco, TX. I think it's fair to say Colorado is the most high-profile offer he possesses (Arkansas State, Baylor, Nevada, Tulsa and UTSA are the others) and I know the Buffs are pretty hot on him as a guy they could see being a similar player t Davion Taylor, in possessing a good combo of physical tools, speed and pass coverage abilities.
Pittman is another guy who falls into Keith Miller's sphere of influence, as Frisco is very close to The Colony and the two teams played each other in a very anticipated showdown in mid-October.
Solid upside for Colorado landing him.
4. Jordan Berry: three-star DT, 6-foot-3, 280 pounds. Berry was committed to LSU from mid-June to mid-October and after the Buffs lost out on snagging former LSU commit Patrick Jenkins, who also decommitted from LSU, in September, but then very quickly jumped aboard TCU about two weeks later, Berry might be the redeemer for the Buffs and Hankton in that sense.
Significant Pac-12 interest has come his way via Arizona, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA, USC and Utah, who have all offered, as has Georgia and Florida.
IN CLOSING: Many of you, myself included, have been hoping some defensive line action would happen late in this class cycle and via Harris and Berry being in town this weekend, the DLs we've all been craving very well might be falling into place soon for Colorado.
I have good reason to believe that all of the above guys are coming into town this weekend with an already positive outlook on the Buffaloes, and a picturesque weekend visit to Boulder, a good crowd/game at Folsom on Saturday and just being in such a recruitment-heavy environment in general in Boulder is setting a very positive stage for the Buffs to be in a position to land some if not all of these guys.
This is a major, major weekend for CU on the recruiting trail, and the stage is no doubt set. Mel Tucker has talked about it a lot and seems confident heading into it. Some long-awaited big news might be just around the corner...
Possible flip: I believe I posted it a few days ago, but reiterating, Purdue commit Christian Gonzalez, the four-star CB from The Colony, TX. (teammate of Keith Miller) is also coming to town this weekend, with Miller, who has expressed confidence in a possible flip to Colorado from his friend and teammate Gonzalez.
Gonzalez himself apparently has tried to keep his visit on the hush hush, as one might expect, but him coming to Boulder is a solid sign that he is open to changing allegiances.
2021 unofficials:
1. Montrell Johnson (three-star RB from New Orleans with six offers, CU being his lone P5 one other than Tennessee)
2. Ja'Derris Carr (2021 RB from Aurora...don't believe he has an offer yet but obviously he's a local guy and Colorado feels strongly enough about him to get him up for a game)
