August 31st: Practice Report

BOULDER-- With only two more days until the big showdown the team doesn't have much more to prepare for. Coach MacIntyre understands what his team needs to do in order to pull out a win Friday night.

"We're ready to play and they are excited about going and playing. We'll have a walk-through tomorrow, film sessions and you know just keep fine tuning it, make sure were crystal clear on everything."

With the Colorado State game being the first game of the season, the coaching staff has prepared their logistics and coaching techniques and are ready to utilize them against the Rams.

"We fell good about it, we've gone over it quite a few times, we'll go over it a couple more times again and theres always something that comes up during the game but I feel like I've covered everything that we should cover and go from there."

Last season scoring in the red zone was a big problem from the Buffs but this year they are looking to change that and Friday night is going to be their first real test.

"We have worked on it hard, I feel like were more conformable down there and thats an area that we need to get more touchdowns and less filed goals."

A team can't just win a game by throwing the ball and the Buffs know that, this year they have been progressing on their run game. With Phillip Lindsay at the helm of the running backs they should gain much more rushing yards this season.

"I feel good about our run game, of course it goes game to game and what the team is doing against ya. But I do feel good about our run game, I do feel like we have guys that understand our run game, I feel like Sefo understands how to get us in certain things we need to get into."

After losing Juwann Winfree early this August, the wide recover core was left with a few questions. Who would step up in his place and would they come in and make a difference? Besides Bryce Bobo, Kabion Ento has the capabilities to step up and make big plays for the Buffaloes.

"KB's done well. KB has excellent hands, he's big, he's rangy I'm excited to watch KB play, he'll be out there a lot for us and hopefully he'll make a lot of plays.

Come Friday night we well see how this veteran team with tons of leadership performs.

"I feel very good about it, just the leadership with so many older guys that have been through the fire before, been in the hotel, been in the night before, understand how to focus, how to be ready. So I definitely feel good about it."

The older guys should lead the younger guys this season and especially get them prepared for the big rivalry game. The younger guys are going to need that leadership from the older guys, so they can go into the game knowing what to expect and knowing what the team needs from them in order to pull off a win.

August 30th: Tuesday Press Conference

Today Coach MacIntyre, Sefo Liufau and Jimmie Gilbert will talk to the media and preview the Rocky Mountain Showdown. Videos will be posted later along with key quotes.

Key Quotes:
Mike MacIntyre:

"We're excited about this game, all the depth charts finally came out yesterday. I was kind of looking at it, I've been hearing about how young CSU is, they have 16 seniors on the two deep, we have 16 seniors. We have six freshmen in our two deep, they have four freshmen in the two deep. I'm not buying that they're not a good football team."

"I think they are one of the best offensive lines we played last year, I think they will be one of the best offensive lines we play this year, the way they work together, their run schemes. They are an excellent football team."

"All those kids that played two years are going into their third year and they were better and they were bigger and they've playing against a lot of good football teams. Number two we got more pass rush, we had more sacks, thats the key."

"They all got to work together, I think that they will do that again."

"Coach Bobo is an excellent head coach, been an unbelievable offensive coordinator for a long time, he's going to do what he does and the young man that came in from Georgia knows his system. So I don't think the system will change that much, we just got to be able to stop them. My personal opinion I think they'll play Nick Stevens that's just me but I don't know."

"We'll be ready for whatever they do and we got stop them, whoever walks out there."

"I'm excited he's back and he's looked good out at practice, I'm looking forward to him having a year, that he's earned to have," Coach Mac on Sefo's first game back.

"I think that with our fan base and their fan base if you go out to eat anywhere, or you go do something they are going to have watch parties. It's a game that last 365 days a year. The excitement of that and it being an instate rivalry game makes it very exciting and it's something that is talked about all the time."

"They see that heighten intensity, they see that understanding, when they see other people overcome things and the work ethic and the time they have to put into it, basically if you know your friends and hopes and dreams and you can help him reach his hopes and dreams, you're going to do a little bit more and thats what I see Sefo has done with this team."

Sefo Liufau:
"They definitely made a lot of strides, I saw it starting from spring, going against them in fall camp you can definitely see a difference in terms of athleticism, coverage indicators, they do a lot of good things as a defense especially the secondary."

"Just don't get in the way of ourselves, I think last year a lot of times in all three phases we kind of hurt ourselves in different ways. Whenever you want to be a great team you have to limit your mistakes especially self inflicted ones."

"To me its just another game, you know it doesn't really matter who we lineup against in week one, it's just another game to me. It's not to distract anyone, whoever you put in front of me I'm gonna go out there and play my best and treat each game like its a championship game. Each week you want to go 1-0 and do your best against whoever you lineup against."

"Bryce has definitely stepped up, since Juwann got injured which was an unfortunate event, but Bobo has definitely stepped up in the mid to later part of camp when Juwann went down. He took the majority of the reps after that. He's done a lot of great things."

"It's also my senior year, it's also the realization that theres only so many snaps left in college football for me and you never know when you or anyone else could get hurt again. There's definitely an heighten sense of focus for me and definitely holding people more accountable on offense because I realized how good we can be all across the board."

"At times we were in tight situations, most of the time it was when we were down by a couple points, I think I tired to get it all back at once which can get you into trouble a lot. It's a realization to myself that you don't have to do it all and that you have playmakers around you."

Jimmie Gilbert:
"This year it's starting the season off right, starting the season off on a winning note and getting the ball rolling. It's bragging rights for the people that live here. For us seniors its the last first game we get and we gotta come out with a win."

"Yes and no. The reason I say no, is we go week by week, so every week is our rivalry week for us. We try to give each of our opponents respect and if you respect your opponent, you learn about your opponent, you game plan against your opponent and thats just what we're going right now."

"If we're gonna win we have to stop the run and last year we did not tackle well enough so thats been a real big emphasis these past few weeks. Tackling, stopping the run, setting edges, things we need to do to make them throw the ball and when we get them to throw the ball thats when the D-line starts to come in and get the sacks they need, the pressure they need to cause turnovers."

"The handwork we put in, the strides that the younger guys have made, the experience we have at inside backer, D-line and safety, the experience we have on the offensive line and the running backs, the quarterbacks as well as the receivers. We have a lot of experience, we have a lot of energy, we have a lot of talent and this year is our year to showcase that."

"It's really important to me that we get to where we need to be so we can get those goals that we've set out since day one. Since Coach Mac has been here, since the team has been here, so it's very important."
