I'm in Tampa and had dinner with a big supporter of USF football. He was very upset about the Jim Leavitt firing several years ago. He said that Leavitt started the football program from nothing and built it into a national power. Leavitt even defeated Florida State 17-7 in Tallahassee. The reason he was fired was because he grabbed one his players by the throat, slapped in in the face, and then lied about it.
According to this booster, the affronted player deserved the coach's anger. Anyway, since Leavitt got fired, their program has been down. Leavitt was able to recruit players who were not recruited by Miami, Florida State, and Univ of Florida to run his winning machine.
Now we have Leavitt who will get us some of these Florida kids who will impact our program. His former players loved and respected him and he was tough as nails. This booster plus others associated with USF said that their loss was our gain. Leavitt is a smart coach who knows talent and can get the best out of this talent!
