Xavier Smith was recruited by Brett Maxie, a coach with whom he has a lot in common. Maxie was recruited to Texas Southern in the mid-1980s as a quarterback but while still an underclassman, switched positions to DB.
Smith, who played QB at Langston Hughes High in Georgia from his freshman-junior seasons, switched to safety this past summer. Naturally, the two got on nicely together, with Smith thinking he can learn a lot from Maxie.
Clearly Maxie is going with his guy/eyes on this one, as CU represents Smith's only P5 opportunity.
Furthering home that point is the fact that Maxie kept recruiting Smith even after the latter broke his leg back on Oct. 29, prematurely ending his high school career.
Maxie must think he's getting an absolute steal here.
