I don't mean to be misleading in the title. Karl Dorrell didn't say BURN IN HELL! to the players who left CU this offseason or anything, but I used the word "controversial" because this comment by Dorrell certainly seemed to create the most unrest, at least as far as Twitter is concerned.

Dorrell was asked if looking back on the many players to hit the portal, namely Colorado's starters in 2021, if it required him to do any soul searching or look inwards as to why those guys left.

He began by explaining that in the vast majority of cases, players leave for different reasons.

However, he went on to offer some self-criticism, indicating that he should have been better immediately after the season about sitting players down for exit interviews and really gauging if there were any problems brewing among various guys.

Here's what Dorrell said in its entirely. Lots of run-on sentences here...For you grammar officers out there, don't shoot the transcriber!

HCKD: "I know that it’s going to be important that we have great communication and great feedback from coaches and players alike, to make sure that we understand the progress of a young player (and) that we give him great instruction about what he needs to do in the near future to continue to improve."

I would say, the things that I think from what I’ve understood is that, I went out recruiting right after the season and probably, I look back and hindsight-wise, it might not have been the most appropriate thing to do. I probably should have had some interviewing process right after the season, just to check in with all of our players and get some discussions about how their experience has been, where they need to go from here — things of that nature…

We have to make sure that we’re pretty much in lockstep with our current players eve though we’re in a recruiting process for adding additional (players) along the way. But I think the communication piece needs to improve and we’ll continue to work on those things so that we’re all on the same page in case there is someone that is disappointed or someone that is thinking about going into the portal — maybe we get a chance to visit about that particular player and maybe get a solution done prior to them actually entering the portal."

Curious as to if these remarks irritate you or if you found them surprisingly honest and appreciate a rare no-BS reply. As I alluded to above, Twitter is far more in the first camp than the latter.

I saw people laughing that it only now occurred to Dorrell, in his long years as a coach, that timely exit interviews are wise to do.

Essentially, some folks tied his comments above to what he said this past season, somewhat infamously, regarding the Mitch Rodrigue firing and how OLs were coming up to him saying they'd learned more in a few days under William Vlachos than they had "in some time."

Others took that as another example of Dorrell sticking his foot in his mouth.

I dunno. His comment didn't bother me much. If anything, I thought it was rare in its honesty and bluntness.

The way I see it, I see fans complaining all the time about wanting more frank answers. But every time Dorrell has given a frank answer, he gets criticized. Can't have it both ways, I suppose.

I personally am fine with what he said. He took some responsibility and outlined how to be better in the future.

What do you think?
