BOULDER— It was shown in the spring game, that Colorado seems to be in good hands with their quarterbacks. All of the quarterbacks that played, showed their strengths and one guy really stood out.
Redshirt freshman Sam Noyer. For Noyer, this spring has been different than his first year.
“You know just getting thrown in, actually in the fire now, things are coming at me faster but I’m starting to pick things up and things are starting to slow down now and you know I think it’s been successful not only for myself but for the whole team so far,” Noyer said after a spring practice.
During the spring game Noyer went 6-of-6 for 51 yards and threw a beautiful touchdown pass to Kabion Ento. People have been raving about Noyer’s accuracy and although he doesn't feel it’s right to talk about himself like that he knows his accuracy is his strength.
“That’s really not for me to say, I would like to say that though,” Noyer said. “I’m just worried about getting better everyday and that does have to do with accuracy and stuff like that but like I said I’m just trying to get better everyday.”
This year Noyer is going to get a lot of reps behind center especially since he has moved for third team to second team in just one season and the guy above him on the depth chart pushes him even harder to get better during practice.
“Definitely, obviously Steven is a great ball player and so everyday we come out and we compete, it’s really no competition for us, we just have a mindset to get better personally and to help the team get better.”
And while the quarterbacks are in good shape this season, their main targets, the receivers are also sitting pretty heading into fall which makes Noyer’s job easier.
“It’s really beneficial, having guys like Bobo, Shay, Kabion, Devin, I can go down the list and name guys and it’s really beneficial,” Noyer said when asked how having some many returning receivers benefits the team. “Just having a good receiving core and also a good line, that definitely helps the quarterback and takes some pressure off of our shoulders.”
Guys are working, it’s really not one individual at all, I mean everybody is out here working and getting better everyday and that’s what we need. Guys are pushing each other, guys are working hard and that’s what we like to see.”
Although, Colorado is stacked on offense this season, the defense has lost a group of playmakers but from Noyer’s perspective there hasn't been a drop-off in the Buffs defense.
“A lot of improvement for sure, definitely guys are stepping up and filling positions and that’s something you have to do,” said Noyer. “That’s the game, that’s football, guys are going to leave, so it’s next man up and you have to have that mindset all year. You know somebody goes down, something happens, you got to be ready to go and I think the defense is doing a really good job right now and their improving, I think that’s important.”
Noyer is working hard this season to prove to the coaches that he is a viable backup for Montez and if he continues to impress the coaches with his accuracy, they might have a tough decision on their hands come fall.
