I wanted to dive deep into that Parquet game-tying 3 that forced overtime. Apparently, the play was not specifically drawn up fr him to take that shot, but Jabari Walker intelligently decided to bail on his drive through the paint and instead dish it out to Parquet.
Gotta say — that play reminded me of the Dayton OT winner by D'Shawn Schwartz a few years ago. Somewhat similar situation and result; Tyler Bey got double-teamed in the low post and had the presence of mind to pass the ball to Schwartz as opposed to force something over two defenders.
Not quite apples to apples, comparison-wise, but both plays displayed guys with the ball making smart decisions and opting to pass in a do-or-die moment.
That was the only 3 Parquet made on the night. Boy did he make it count.
Walker and Keeshawn Barthelemy both had their fair share of costly turnovers tonight (Walker was a TO machine by himself in the first half, while Barthelemy committed a few brutal TOs down the stretch of the second half, both of which threatened to neutralize the Buffs from coming back).
However, they kept their heads up and despite their sins, made up for it late in the second half as well as in OT.
Great result/experience for the young players tonight. That really was a solid win. Montana State should have a solid chance to win the Big Sky — they may very well be Tournament material in that regard.
Finally, special shoutout to Nique Clifford; made a bunch of consequential plays on the defensive end as well as by rebounding (team-high 9 boards, one shy of a double-double with his 11 points). Really encouraged by what I am seeing from him.
Battey and Parquet played like seniors and leaders, even if it took awhile.
Fun game to see live! Nice win. Work to be done for sure. Lots to clean up, but a hard-earned W.
