Interviews from Kenneth Olugbode, Phillip Lindsay and Coach MacIntyre after the scrimmage.
Practice Report:
BOULDER-- On Saturday, August 13th held their first fall camp scrimmage at Folsom Field. Today we provide you with a recap and takeaways from the scrimmage.
The team came out ready to play today and their effort and enthusiasm was apparent during the scrimmage.
"I saw a lot of aggression."
During the scrimmage, the team did one-on-one drills in the redzone. As usual the wide receivers and the defensive backs lined up against each other, but the last match up came from offensive lineman, Shane Callahan and nose tackle, Josh Tupou. Callahan went up for the ball but Tupou made a play for the ball at the end and the ball fell incomplete. Callahan wasn't happy with the play. Safe to say that provided some entertainment for the team, coaches and the fans and got the scrimmage started off in a good way.
The team worked a lot on their kicking today during the scrimmage. Diego Gonzalez made all of his field goals today, even the ones from the left hash. Chris Graham also came in a few times and had a few nice kicks.
"I was really pleased with how are field goal kickers kicked, under pressure, we were bringing pressure every time. I was really pleased with that."
As most of you are curious about the offensive line, that curiosity may have been slightly answered today. The offensive lineman that played the most with the ones today were, Jeromy Irwin, Gerrad Kough, Alex Kelley, Tim Lynott and Sam Kronshage.
“I thought they did well, there was a couple plays there, our third unit some of those guys are a little young and even sometimes the defensive guys were coming to the wrong places. But I thought the first and second unit for the most part did well, we’ll look at it on film.”
The offense was able to throw together some nice drives and the defense was also consistent on their end.
“I thought the backed up drive, getting out of the hole was really good, made a couple third downs, the two minute when we were in a jam there that was a really good play we made. I thought we had some rhythm to it and I thought the defense stepped up and made some plays in some different areas.”
Along with Addison Gillam, Derek McCartney and Jimmie Gilbert didn’t practice today. Christian Shaver and Rick Gamboa, along with Kenneth Olugbode were at the linebacker position. Drew Lewis stepped into his linebacker role nicely today, he played with the first and second teams today.
Juwann Winfree and Jaleel Awini did not practice today, Shay Fields saw minimal reps a wide receiver also.
Jordan Gehrke was the star of the scrimmage at the quarterback position. He threw two long touchdowns to Tony Julmisse (80 years) and Kabion Ento (50 yards). During the scrimmage those were the only two touchdowns.
Along with a good play on offense, Julmisse also had some good plays on defense. “We’re gonna keep using him both ways for a while and we’ll decide which side he emphasizes on and I think we’ll probably keep him on the other side and still practicing there incase we have some injuries.”
“We haven’t made our mind up on that, as you can tell it’s hard too, he makes plays on both sides of the ball.”
The team looked good in the redzone, Phillip Lindsay and Donovan Lee got in the end zone during redzone drills and the defense was also able to stop them a few times. We are going to need to see this from both sides of the ball this year. Converting in the redzone is going to key for the team.
The scrimmage today was a good opportunity for Sefo Liufau to get back in the full swing of things. He did throw one interception on the day. Trying to go deep to Shay Fields but threw it short and Ahkello Witherspoon went up and grabbed it out of the air.
Look for Ahkello to do that a lot this season, he is a big body at 6’3’’ and can go up and make big plays.
Ryan Moeller was listed on the injured list along with Michael Adkins.
The team has the day off tomorrow and will continue on Monday.
