Fourth day of camp today. Will post later today a report along with video interviews.
Interview with Coach Mike Macintyre after practice 4
Interview with Isaiah Oliver
Interview with Michael Adkins II
Practice:
BOULDER— After practice today, coach Mike MacIntyre went straight into talking about how the guys were able to really get after it at practice, especially because they are all finished with summer school. Their sole focus now is getting ready for the season.
“They are all done with summer school, it makes it easier in between the practices and you don’t have to go as early in the morning, that type of thing so it works out well for us."
Not only does the team have leaders but they also have a good amount of depth at every position, this will come in handy during games where the tempo is constantly at a 10.
“It's always crucial, depth is crucial, but in our league when they are playing really fast it’s a little more critical.”
With Josh Tupou and Samson Kafovalu being back on the team, this will help with the rotation on the defensive line. Jordan Carrell and Leo Jackson III will be able to rotate in and out more rather than being on the field for every play.
MacIntyre also emphasized the growth and competition at the cornerback position, between Isaiah Oliver and Ahkello Witherspoon. Both have a chance to make big plays this season and will most likely be working together out on the field for many plays. Oliver and Witherspoon should dominate at the cornerback position, along with Chidobe Awuzie they should have no problem covering all of the PAC 12 receivers.
Lastly, MacIntyre talked about Diego Gonzalez and his struggles from the left hash last year.
“He was overcompensating, it was really one of those things with his first step. If you step with your first step and its turned a certain way, the angle of the way your kicking. So when he was stepping to the left, his first step with his right foot was turning a little too much.”
Gonzalez has corrected that, so making field goals from the left hash shouldn’t be too much of a problem for him this year.
Key Quotes from player interviews:
Isaiah Oliver:
“It’s a great benefit having Ahkello Witherspoon, Tedric Thompson, Chido, all these older guys that have been in the system, been playing the game for a long time. Just mentor you, tell you what it’s like, how it’s suppose to be. It’s great to have them just always looking out for you, telling you what you could do better.”
Michael Adkins II:
“Looking good, were just all trying to get back into the speed of the game, it’s a lot faster once you start getting out here and doing stuff with pads. So we’re just trying to get adjusted to that and transitioning from the summer into the actual fall."
