(Washington, DC) -- Nike is reportedly under scrutiny by U.S. authorities in the corruption investigation of FIFA [[ FEE-FAH ]]. The "Wall Street Journal" reports there are allegations of corruption involving payments Nike made in 1996 to sponsor Brazil's national team . The newspaper says the allegations are implied in the Justice Department's indictment of officials of soccer's governing body. Nike paid 160-million dollars to sponsor Brazil. The indictment claims a multinational U.S. sportswear company cut a side deal after striking the agreement with the Brazilian federation.

The newspaper says that deal allegedly involved payments from the company that were used for bribes and kickbacks. The article said people familiar with the matter confirm Nike is the company.
