Seems like yesterday after the season that people jumped on our staff for not diving into the portal and getting commitments right away. While there is some merit to that for those early strong takes, the real key is to stay patient.
If you react too early and take some guys to fill holes that you may not love, you could miss out on guys you do love that end up entering the portal later. It seems portal activity hasn't slowed down a bit and I think guys will continue entering the portal through May as spring practices end and their semesters are over. They will go home, re-evaluate, and enter the portal. There will be lots of good players available in June IMO. Heck, there will be guys who transfer in August after a couple of weeks of camp don't go their way due to coaching, other players, school issues, etc. Upgrading your team will be a year round task IMO. If you are patient enough, you will find the right fit for your team.
For CU's sake, even if, say, Max Wray doesn't sign on, there will be other good choices out there that suddenly appear in the portal. The same theory will apply for basketball. There are guys just showing up on the portal as well as guys that were released from LOI whom are studs. If you weren't patient enough to leave a ship (or two) open for one of those guys, then you miss out on the opportunity to greatly improve your team. Hopefully this is what Tad was thinking with that last scholarship and never really meant to keep it until 2022. Hopefully he is playing the patience game and waiting for that 1 player no one thought would be available to show up and we get him. Karl Dorrell has done a good job with this thus far. Keep your options open for options that may not come available until later.
It will be interesting to see how teams approach all of this next year. I'll bet a lot more teams are patient with it. Strategies will change a lot either way as teams learn from this year's results.
