Dear Buffs Fan,

It appears winter has finally arrived in earnest with the recent snowfall, and that of course is in concert with basketball gearing for the home stretch and our ski team readying for defense of our national championship.

Construction Update
But first, I am proud to announce that we took possession of the indoor practice facility (IPF) this past Monday. Yes, our Athletics Complex Expansion is just about complete, wrapping up a few things here and there before landscaping will complete the project in the next few months. If you recall, we broke ground in May 2014 and had targeted early 2016 for completion, and we’ve essentially met that goal.

The first phase was finished in September 2014 with the renovated seating inside Folsom Field; the second phase – the construction of the Champions Center and the remodeling of the Dal Ward Athletic Center, was completed last November; and the 105,000 square foot IPF which includes one of the nation’s premier indoor track surfaces is now operational as both the football and track programs have already held workouts in the building.

With the track teams now occupying the IPF, they had their farewell to Balch Fieldhouse in mid-January with the annual Potts Invitational. Through the years, we’ve had well over 100 All-Americans perform in the building, which has stood on the west side of the stadium since it was constructed in 1936. We’re all looking forward to the first meet we will host next January.

National Letter of Intent Day
Mike MacIntyre
announced his fourth recruiting class this past Wednesday, and it was great to see top recruits swing to us in the final hours and days, as well as the addition of quarterback Davis Webb, a transfer from Texas Tech, and three junior college transfers who all could have an immediate impact. Coach Mac and his staff did a terrific job down the stretch to bolster this recruiting class.

The annual season ticket renewal process for the upcoming 2016 season will begin Monday, February 15, with the deadline to renew being March 14. This year’s package includes five Pac-12 schools who will visit Boulder, Oregon State, Arizona State, UCLA, Washington State and Utah, along with a non-league game against Idaho State in addition to the season opener in Denver versus Colorado State in the Rocky Mountain Showdown.

Danny Sanchez added five national recruits to the women’s soccer team, as he announced his 2016 class this past Thursday. He lost seven seniors from last year’s team and is confident this group, which features several experienced club players, will also have an immediate impact on his program.

Competition Update
The men’s basketball team is 17-7 through Saturday's game at Oregon State, including a 6-5 mark in Pac-12 play. We're still in great shape in an incredibly balanced Pac-12 (considered by most as the nation’s strongest conference this year), with as many as nine schools projected to make the NCAA tournament.

We have four home games remaining, including Washington (February 13) and Arizona (February 24) who we are battling with at the top of the standings. We’d like to see you at all four games to support this team.

The women’s team has struggled, in part to youth, and in part to that we have played the nation’s eighth-toughest schedule to date. A 10-game run of frustration that started with a 76-74 loss to No. 24 Washington came to an end last Sunday with a 66-63 win over a USC team that had spent a good portion of the year ranked in the top 25.

You should not be too concerned that Richard Rokos’ skiers haven’t won a meet at the halfway mark of the season; we have two second place finishes and a third place showing, but things are so tight between CU, Utah and Denver that we actually lead the RMISA point standings over both our arch ski rivals.

The spring seasons for women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf are or will be underway within the week, and women’s lacrosse will begin its third season of existence on February 12 with an important conference game right from the start, as we open at the University of Denver.

The netters actually started play three weeks ago and are 3-2 on the season, and also had a program first: sophomore Tina Bokhua was named the Pac-12 player of the week on February 1, becoming our first player to be recognized with the honor since we joined the conference.

Accolades
It was good to see Josh Scott rewarded with the Pac-12 Conference’s player of the week honor for his efforts in our back-to-back wins over Oregon State and Oregon. It was the first time Josh has been honored by the conference as well as the first time a CU player was the recipient this season; we have had six winners of the award since we joined the league five years ago.

Speaking of honors, congratulations are in order for juniors Erin Clark (cross country) and Esther Lee (golf), who will be honored this March 13 by the Sportswomen of Colorado for their performances during the 2015 calendar year. Clark had a tremendous season capped by her earning All-America honors in leading CU to the Pac-12 championship and second place in the NCAA’s. Lee was ranked as the No. 22 player in the nation, earned All-Pac-12 honors and garnered second-team All-America mention.

And in case you missed it, we’ve had two great Buffaloes receive Hall of Fame honors. Former basketball player Chuck Williams was inducted into the Colorado High School Hall of Fame on January 27; a star performer for the Buffs from 1965-68, he is a graduate from Denver East High School. And earlier in the month, it was announced that Herb Orvis would become the eighth Buffalo to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame; that ceremony will take place this December in New York City.

Academically, our student-athletes had another tremendous semester. The grade point average for the fall 2015 term for all 354 of our students was 2.968, while the cumulative grade point was 2.925; it was the best semester GPA, fall or spring, on record. In addition, 11 of the 15 programs (indoor and outdoor track are combined) improved their semester grade points from the spring and 10 saw their cumulative averages rise, while over 50 percent of our athletes recorded over 3.0 last fall.

The women’s ski team posted the best term (3.703) and cumulative (3.647) numbers – both of which are the highest ever in either category by any program since we started tracking this information in the mid-1990s.

Now just because we’re closing in on the traditional ribbon cutting for a new facility, it doesn’t mean we are through with its fundraising. But if you prefer to pick up the phone and wish to visit with any of our Buff Club staff, please feel free to call the Buff Club office (303-492-2200).

It’s only fitting to close acknowledging that CU players have won 49 Super Bowl rings to date, and we have had 90 different players appear in the previous 49 games – ninth-most all-time. So with two former Buffaloes in Tyler Polumbus and Nick Kasa on the Bronco roster, it would be great to have them earn Super Bowl rings Nos. 50 and 51. Thus …

Go Buffs and Go Broncos!

Collaboration and Unity,
