A little bit after the fact, but I thought I'd mention it for the benefit of those who have never visited for a matchup against the Utes. I like to explore cities and get a sense of how to get around. Rice - Eccoles stadium is situated much like Cal's Memorial stadium way up near the top of a hill. If you walked it would be like walking from Pearl Street to Chautauqua Park. Fortunately they have a light rail system that runs directly to the stadium. Everybody rides it; it is packed with Ute fans going to the game.
Most of the hotels are in the downtown section which is convenient for a couple of reasons. One it is an easy walk to the Courthouse station to catch the Red University of Utah Medical Center line to the stadium. And, maybe more importantly, it is near one of the few state licensed liquor stores (which are few and far between). If you stay near the airport you can still catch a light rail to the Courthouse station no problem.
If you are planning on going directly into the stadium, the the Stadium station is where you want to get off and you can walk right in from there. But the next station after that is where the tailgating takes place. There is a lot of parking in that area if you are driving. If you are looking to eat before the game a stop or two before the Stadium stop is in a large commercial district with lots of restaurants. I noticed that a bunch of Ute fans got off at that stop and I asked a fellow why, and he said they were going to eat before the game.
One last thing I'd like to mention is that if you're looking for a place to go after the game, very near the Courthouse station is a real sports bar called the 'Green Pig.' I didn't go there but it looks like the real deal.
Salt Lake City is a very nice town with friendly people everywhere. I guess if we are to develop a real rivalry Buff fans should start showing up for the away game Ute matchup. Hope this is helpful.
