Moorpark College defensive back Jalin Burrell proved to be a high priority for the Colorado staff and it showed when he made his final decision.
"Overall it was just having Coach MacIntyre being the one that reached out and offered me. It was also how their other coaches and defensive back coach recruited me. It was more than just football. It was about growing into a man and looking into what they are doing academically. That was a big factor and a reason why I committed so quickly."
Burrell decided to act quick when the scholarship came his way.
"They offered me the first week of June. Coach MacIntyre told me that I can jump on it or take my time. I really respected that. A lot of coaches say that you have until this date or spot. He gave me the time and knew it was a difficult time with being recruited. Cal actually ended up reaching out to me the very same day and was very interested. It took me a day or two and I called Coach back and I gave him my commitment."
The attention from the Buff staff was something that grew for Burrell over time.
"In January, they came out for one of our defensive ends or an offensive player. I didn't think they needed a defensive back before Signing Day. After Signing Day, in late April they came back through and our defensive coordinator let me know that they were interested. They let me know that they were interested and they were evaluating and re-evaluating me. I talked to one of the grad assistants and he said that they were evaluating my film many times. They were so excited with me and thought I could contribute right away. Then the offer came and it was history from there."
Burrell had a number of other power five programs recruiting him but the attention that Colorado showed him paid off.
"Oregon State was one. I was considering Cal, TCU had come, Arkansas State, Ohio, and Louisiana Lafayette. There was also BYU. A lot of power five teams came through and watched me. Going through evaluations, they wanted to see me this season. Colorado watched me and they were sold on me. They told me how they see me fitting in their system. They showed me how they would use me and how excited they were about me."
A few different early offers were on the table as well for Burrell.
"Arkansas State, Iowa State, Louisiana Lafayette, and Louisiana Tech. I also had New Mexico but some of the contacts were lost when coaches changed spots. The most consistent communication was Coach MacIntyre and Coach Clark. They took the time out of their day to see how I was doing. It was the family type atmosphere and the father type feel that helped me make my decision."
Burrell mentioned that schools are still interested in recruiting but it has not stopped him from staying focused on his commitment.
"Cal is still recruiting me very heavily and so is Louisiana Tech. Everyone else has sagged off. I'd say I am pretty strong with my verbal. Once the papers come, it is a locked in deal. Anything can happen with recruiting but I am pretty solid with Colorado."
Visiting other programs is not something that Burrell plans to be making.
"I don't think so because of Colorado. I feel they have shown me a lot of love and I should return the favor. I feel I gave them my word and I am staying strong with my word."
Burrell is unsure when he will get to Boulder but hopes to do it before any other mid-year enrollees.
"We haven't really talked about it that much but I know it will be January. I'm guessing I want to try and get up there after Christmas and all the family activities. I want to get there a week or two early to get acclimated. I want to go up there and get a couple of weeks to see how everything goes at my new home."
Being a part of a strong recruiting class at Colorado is something that Burrell is thrilled about.
"Oh man, the recruiting class is crazy. We have three or four players who have four stars and a big time quarterback. Everything is going right. Chris Miller was someone I talked to recently and everyone is on the same page. We are on the brink of taking over the PAC 12 South title even though it is very competitive right there. I believe with the guys we have coming in and the base of guys that they have there is little that we can't do. This can be a top ten recruiting class like a USC or UCLA. That is the type of players they are getting."
