Ben Potts and Chris Spears are close to completing a two-year graduate manager program with the Buffs that'll see them both earn their master's degrees. It was interesting to talk with them and get a feel for their day-to-day doings, a lot of which proves to be very important to the men's basketball program in the long run.
Tad Boyle probably put it best by saying: “They’re the guys that nobody sees or talks about…Those guys are instrumental. They do a lot of things in our office, from an analytics point of view (and) a statistics point of view."
Potts and Spears both gave me some insight into projects they've worked on in the past on behalf of the coaches: Last year, Spears gave a presentation to Boyle and Co. that broke down every single 3-pointer the Buffs allowed, and how the shots were allowed, from the 2019-2020 season.
Potts spent weeks plugging information into Microsoft Excel to create a "poor man's lineup efficiency chart" for coaches, illustrating how effective various five-man units were performing.
G.A.s do a lot of dirty work. Until doing this story, I admit I had a better handle on what the football G.A.s were responsible for. Interesting to get some insight into what they do for the basketball team.
