Mangham did play as did Joe Davis. All the backs got at least 4 carries. Tough to tell the context of how things were run as if there was RPO, maybe the QB kept more with some backs than with others, etc. Maybe the defense called for the play to be run than pass with some others in there. Either way, Fontenot got 12 carries so he got the workload. He only gained 30 yards, but maybe the defense was ready for him. He also had 2 catches for 17 yards so he did good work there.
As for Mangham, averaged 5.5 per carry with a max gain of 8. While he only got 4 carries, they were all very consistent. No first downs oddly enough, but his 3 other carries for 14 yards were almost an average of 5 yards per pop. You have to like the fact that he's going to move the yard marker on every carry. That consistency will be well served.
Smith, on the other hand, had a big TD run of 18 yards. The fact that he hit paydirt on a big run likely means he'll be a guy that will get us those 30+ yard runs as long as there's space to get those yards. Kind of like McMillian, he's going to give us those big, busting, explosive plays that change the scoreboard. His other 3 runs averaged just over 2 per carry though so I'm guessing he's not likely to drag tacklers at this point at 190#. That's why I'd love to see him at 200# with more leg strength. He could turn that 2 yard run into a 4 yard run, then get you that 40 yard run. That's the type of runner that is All Pac 12.
On the receiving end, not only did JJ have a scrimmage winning touchdown, but all 3 of his catches went for a first down. His other 2 catches averaged 27 yards per catch. Not to be undone, Arias had a 47 yard catch. Of course, we don't know who was covering them. With guys like Miller and Trujillo out (along with a myriad of safeties), we don't know the level of competition. Either way, it's good to see those 2 making big plays. Jackson especially! He looked lost and rusty a year ago at times. I mean, 2 ACLs, 1 dislocated ankle, and then 1 broken foot later before touching the field and it's amazing he is still at it. That's more than 3 years of injuries back to back. He looks stronger than ever in pictures and now a sophomore, he could become a capable play maker our opponents have no idea about.
Defensively, looks like Van Diest and Newman got a lot of work. Good to see Ray Robninson and Kevin George put up some stats. Haven't heard a thing about George and where they have him playing. I kind of wonder if he's one of the guys they are trying at the new hybrid S/LB spot.
Kicking game. Awesome that we have everyone back. We'll be the deepest kicking team in the country. We have the Vandy transfer Loy along with Kinney and Davis Price all punting. We have last year's fill ins Evan Price and Tyler Francis kicking behind Stefanou. We even have our long snapper coming back as a senior. The only thing that stood out from the stats there is Davis Price still kicking field goals... and missing both of them. Why again was he sent out to kick the game winning field goal against Oregon State when Francis was doing a good job? That decision might be the one that sent the last staff ultimately packing. Price should do nothing but kick off this year. Younger brother had the more accurate leg for sure. Just made me snicker seeing that stat though and thinking about that failed decision against Oregon State.
