The 2016 football season is finally here, as Colorado has officially opened up Fall Camp today.
As things get ready to kickoff, CUSportsNation.com will introduce a new weekly feature: The 3-2-1.
We'll breakdown three things we learned that week, two questions we have, and give one prediction.
Here is the first installment of The 3-2-1.
Colorado is practicing right now, but here are three things we learned about the Buffs over the summer:
Three Things We Learned over the summer
1. Colorado’s 2017 recruiting class is one of the best they’ve put together in years. Coach Mike MacIntyre said during media day the team is finally seeing the benefits of a new recruiting plan he put in place some 18 months ago. He said he added a staff of about five, instead of just one recruiting coordinator, and now they're really starting to see the benefits.
2. The new facilities at Colorado (Champion’s Center) has been a hot topic in what has solid recruits on Colorado. Each time we’ve interviewed one of the latest Colorado Commitments the prospects continue to bring up Colorado’s weight room, champions center, and other new additions. Colorado is clearly keeping up with the times facility wise.
3. Big defensive names returning into the 2016 season. On Wednesday August 3rd Samson Kafovalu was reinstated to the team after taking a plea deal from a off the field issue back in April. That means the defense got another huge boost. Along with Kafovalu who is a 6-foot-4, 260 pound defensive linemen, the Buffs also will return 6-foot-3, 325 pound Josh Tupou, and 6-foot-3, 230 pound Addison Gillam at linebacker who missed most of the season last year due to an injury. Each Kafovalu, Tupou, and Gillam have all started in the past meaning Colorado could start 10 players on defense that have loads of experience.
Two Questions
1. Who will emerge at Running Back other than Phillip Lindsay? With the loss of Patrick Carr who transferred over the summer the running back position needs guys to step up. Michael Adkins II has lots of experience and watch for Donovan Lee who is electric once he gets the football. It’s going to be interesting to see if True Freshmen Beau Bisharat makes a push to get reps.
2. Colorado has to replace their leading receiver in Nelson Spruce, so who’s going to step up for the Buffs over August camp at the receiver position? We are expecting Shay Fields who is a junior to fill the big play void along with incoming JC transfers Juwann Winfree and Kabion Ento to make instant impacts. Junior Bryce Bobo and Devin Ross are also playmakers.
One Prediction
1. Offensive Tackle Jeromy Irwin has big fall camp. After missing 2015 with an injury we’re thinking that Irwin comes into camp fired up and ready to lead the offensive line unit along side returning senior Alex Kelley.
