Can anyone imagine the excitement, but also overwhelming feeling HCMT must be experiencing the moment the press conference ended Thursday? Where do you begin and what do you prioritize?
Recruiting? - But players want to know who their position coach will be.
Building your coaching staff? - But players are getting itchy, doubts are creeping in and they crave constant "love". Do you find your three coordinators and hold off on the other six positions? While left over coaches are still employed and expected to continue working, will their communication with recruits carry any weight given their lame duck status?
Building rapport with and coordinating football department employees to your plan? - What do you tell them, "Just continue on with MM's procedures and policies"? Has to be awkward, but some have been through it before.
Educating yourself on the university and its programs? How can I sell the university to recruits if I don't have knowledge of its merits, history?
And how do you do this by yourself? To our knowledge, he hasn't hired a single assistant coach (not surprised) to which to delegate. 24 hours isn't enough time in a day for what MT has in front of him given the December signing date is days away. My expectation is 1) this recruiting class won't overwhelm, 2) coaching staff won't be completely filled, and 3) football department employees will be in limbo to some degree, but I'm ok with this because of the time restraints with which we burdened him. While the early signing date has been mostly a good thing, it appears that newly hired coaches are in a major disadvantage compared to pre-early signing day coaching changes. Two months became two weeks.
I hope Buff fans are realistic, and understanding that he has more work in front of him than is humanly possible to complete in a few days. Year two should give us a much better picture of what MT is all about.
Interested to know this board's thoughts about the transition.
