OT - My Latest Cancer Journey Adventure

Hello Buff Nation: As we await the start of our seeason, welcome to the latest episode of my ongoing medical saga—season unknown, but the plot thickens!

On August 12th, I took another thrilling trip to Winston-Salem for my oncology visit. It was pretty much business as usual, with the highlight being my standard couple of bags of fluid before the main event. No matter how hard I try, chronic dehydration and I seem to be in a committed relationship. After the treatment, my trusty driver and friend, Keith, and I made a pit stop at the West End Café—a staple in historic Winston-Salem. It's not quite as good as Pasta Jay's, but we filled our bellies, then hit the road back to Charlotte, where I immediately crashed for the next four hours. Between the trip and the cocktail of meds, I was out like a light!

Now, for the shocking part: my drug costs a jaw-dropping $77,000 per dose. Thankfully, I’m currently receiving it at no charge under a compassionate consideration program. Fingers crossed that with all the billing changes in the hospital and insurance world, I can keep riding that no-charge wave!Of course, the bills for all the other visits, copays, procedures, CT scans, and medications still have my name on them. But hey, what's life without a few extra zeros on your bills, right?

In other news, my vision has been giving me more trouble than a bad plot twist. Despite changing my eyeglass prescription, things have only gotten blurrier. So, I went back to the eye doc to figure out what the heck is going on. Drumroll, please... it turns out my cataracts are now COMPLETELY mature! The good news? It's crystal clear why I couldn’t see. A follow-up appointment is in the works, and soon I'll have a surgical date set. Goodbye, glasses (fingers crossed)! A friend donated 2 club tickets for the October 12 game with Okie State. I want to make sure I don't miss any details!

ESPN article

Good article on CU. It’s tough but the numbers back it up. It falls in line with the national opinion. Better than last year but not great. SS great QB but had a mediocre season last year by end of year because line was terrible and he holds the ball far far too long. Travis Hunter plays too many snaps but will be the best player on the field each game. Kid could be the best in country at WR or DB ( I disagree on the DB assessment ) if he played just one. A true talent ( no question). Switch to Shurmur was to highlight SS to try and make him number one pick

OL can’t possibly not be better but no continuity and a grab bag
DL should be better by same reasoning
RB should be better
WR solid

Notes From Practice today post #1

First the Football Fever for sure started in me today. We are less than 20 days away from kickoff. The AD team talked over breakfast. My notes:

  • All naming rights are at play, they have hired a group to work on the stadium, the new 25 yard line options, indoor facility etc. This is an urgency but it seamed from the tone it was harder than they want it to me. Not sure if $ amount or just sponsors?
  • They fully believe as @dtownbuff said we are just a few years away from another shift. They didn't say it but the comment was due to PAC 12 network not being part of Nelson's ratings we are currently dead last in the BIG12 for "exposure" This is done over a 7 year span. Last year was great we were #3 in the country, but 6 years before that really hurt us.
  • No new sports for a very long time.. felt like forever unless it was needed and if it was it would be a very small sport, mentioned woman's marathon or something.
  • Third best year in fundraising in school history (July 23 to June 2024) Last year was #1
  • About $21M must be "given" to student athletes going into 2025, it is 22% of revenue the Athletic Department takes in. Not donations.
  • 105 total players, we have about 125 now, so it will actually cut players.
  • Scholarships can be done how ever they want as well as the division of the profit sharing piece. Give a "walk on" a $10,000 scholarship and $500 a month, or Full scholarship and $5,000,000.
  • They believe where it is at now will change before it is set in stone in 2025.
  • This year RG is all about exposure (answers some questions) we need to get the viewers up so we make to cut so to speak. (this is my interpretations to what he said)
  • West side is a ways out, felt like it will only happen if we make the cut in 2028 or whenever it is. Unless a giant donor comes in.
  • Last a note the food staff is awesome! Third or fourth mean I have had during a "players event" and it was wonderful.

The 2024 season

The CU football record for 2024 could go in several directions. Here's my take:

The clear favorites for CU wins:
--ND State (watch out, but we have more raw talent. A lot more)
--at CSU (FoCo won't help. Won't be close like last yeat)
--Baylor (solid win)
--Cincinnati (Bearcats aren't there yet)

The pretty even games, but certainly not easy:
--at Nebraska (They've spent six months preparing for just this game; Raiola will be in our sights)
--at UCF (we match up well with them, but the road trip is worrisome)
--KSU (an excellent team, well coached, decent talent; both teams will be coming off a bye)
--KU at Arrowhead (an even game, at KC)

The toughest games for CU wins:
--at Arizona (lots of talent, lots of heat)
--at Texas Tech (underrated, some real players, and nasty at home)
--Utah (the usual)
--Oklahoma St (a team that could be, and probably will be the conference champ)

My bottom line: Every game is winnable, every one, but a bunch of them also are lossable. If our collection of new faces comes together, and we stay healthy, home wins over Utah and OSU (the two best teams on paper) are even possible. A prediction of a 6-6 or 7-5 record seems justifiable. Anything better would be a great showing, anything less a huge disapoointment.

Buffs NewsStand - Aug 15

Just looked at the week 1 CFB schedule

Kind of disappointing as far as the number of games that will have entertainment value:
60 games including P4 schools.
6 are P4 vs P4
18 are against G5
32 are against D1AA so not likely to provide much entertainment past the first half.
There are 3 G5 vs G5 games

The only P4 vs D1AA game I will watch is the CU game, since it there is only two D1AA vs D1AA games that night (one P4 vs P4 and one G5 vs G5) I will watch more of it than I normally would have if it was on a jammed packed Saturday. IMO CU will have pretty good control of the game by the middle of the third.
